While part of me hates seeing the National GOP engaging in racial politics I would dearly love to see the democrats hoist by their own petard.

Every election is important. '04 is shaping up to be a real brass-knuckles affair.

Besides, whom do Democrats think they're kidding? They were against Estrada's nomination from the moment they realized they couldn't control him, intimidate him or take credit for his success. After all, what fun is it for liberals to put minorities in powerful positions if doing so doesn't leave the benefactors feeling somehow empowered? BINGO!

Bush has a lot more in store for the anti-Catholic, anti-Hispanic bigots of the DNC.
No devout Roman Catholic Hispanic will EVER be allowed by the democrats to run for national office or be appointed to a judgeship.
I cannot wait to see what bombs Dubya plans to drop.

After several failed attempts by Senate Republicans to break a Democratic filibuster, it's starting to look as if Miguel Estrada may never make it to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.
The controversial Bush nominee may have to settle for the strangest of consolation prizes: his name plastered on bumper stickers in the 2004 election.
....
Some prize! and Owen and Pickrering too? Is their fate to be names on bumper stickers?

The joke really is on the Dems. I watch a lot of Univision and Telemundo (My wife is Cuban). Everybody knows that the Cubans are conservative (the younger generation less so). What they don't realize is that the "hispanics" are more conservative than assumed. I hate to paint with a broad brush, but they work very hard, are extremely family oriented, love the U.S for the opportunity that it gives them, and are staunch Catholics who have no tolerance for same sex marriage or abortions (to a lesser degree).
The Estrada mess is getting big exposure on Spanish TV. He is a hero to a lot of South and Central Americans. He came here at 17(?), learned the language, went to Harvard, and became a distinguished Jurist. That is what most "Hispanic" immigrants want for their children. To see the Dems deny him is really pi$$ing them off.

Harkin also explained why he's helping Democrats prevent a Senate vote on the confirmation of lawyer Miguel Estrada to a federal court judgeship.
Harkin told his colleagues he's heard that Estrada - who learned English after immigrating to America from Honduras, who graduated with honors from Harvard's law school, who was given the highest possible rating by the American Bar Association, a man Harkin's never met - might be a "right-wing kook."
Harkin also is outraged that Estrada refuses to answer senators' questions.
Senate records show Harkin has not asked a single question of Estrada.

"After several failed attempts by Senate Republicans to break a Democratic filibuster, it's starting to look as if Miguel Estrada may never make it to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit."
This is only because Frist has no backbone. CandyPants Frist should have demanded that the Dems conduct an actual fillibuster. If he had, this would have ended a long time ago.

Even better President Bush should appoint all the blocked judges with recess appointments the next time Congress adjourns.

Don't think for a second that it is just this nomination. There are a lot of other forces at work here.
Down here in Houston, and across Texas in general, Texicans are getting frozen out of the Democratic party by Blacks and Liberals. They are very underrepresented. This is a fact. AS the old conservativs die off and the new ones come in they are feeling more at home in the more merit-based Republican party. WE come a long way from the old conservatives of the fifties and WE deserve the credit.
These two factors can not be over emphasised. Democrats work on race we work on merit.

Senate Democrats managed to convince a handful of Latino advocacy groups to join them in opposing Estrada.
This sounds like union leaders going along with some REALLY LEFTIST stuff, which their voters don't support. This is the kind of stuff which creates Reagan (Bush) Democrats.

The dems won't get away with this, they already lost hispanic votes but Estrada BETTER be passed through and soon or the backlash for the dems will be more horrific as their majority status.

Schumer just spoke. He said Bush shouldn't think he can "swing a two by four" at the Senate to get his nominees confirmed.
Schumer also made his usual comment that ordinary people he talks with agree with him. He seemed to say that more people are coming around to his point of view, contrary to earlier warnings that resisting Bush' nominees would lead to political repercussions.
