Garofalo Awards Announced at White House Press Dinner
NewsMax.com ^ | Saturday, April 26, 2003 | Carl Limbacher

Posted on 04/26/2003 9:20:19 PM PDT by kristinn

Comedienne-turned-antiwar activist Janeane Garofalo will be among those honored at a ceremony sponsored by the Washington, D.C. Chapter of FreeRepublic.com outside tonight's annual White House Correspondents Association Dinner.

The first annual "Garofalo Awards" ceremony will spotlight celebrities who distinguished themselves in recent months with "histrionic predictions of gloom and doom before and/or during Operation Iraqi Freedom [and who] stand head and shoulders above all others for their shrillness, certainty and apocalyptic ravings," a FreeRepublic spokesman told NewsMax.

The award itself - a stuffed ready-to-eat crow on a silver platter - will be given to the top 10 celebrity activists, politicians, pundits and reporters based on votes of FreeRepublic members.

Winners include Garofalo herself, who was the top vote getter based on her bizarre pre-war observation, "We are doomed if we go into this war into the heart of the Arabian world with a U.S. led effort against world opinion. We are doomed if we do this."

CNN news executive Eason Jordan followed in second place, for his recent confession in a New York Times op-ed piece that he and his network covered-up firsthand accounts of Saddam Hussein's torture and execution of innocent civilians.

Other Garafalo Awards winners include:

* Fired NBC and National Geographic reporter Peter Arnett

* Former U.N. weapons inspector Scott Ritter

* Actor Tim Robbins

* Columnist Helen Thomas

* Former President Bill Clinton

Clinton is being honored with a Garofalo for his for remarks to a New York business group last week, where he accused the U.S. of trying to bully the world.

"Our paradigm now seems to be: something terrible happened to us on September 11, and that gives us the right to interpret all future events in a way that everyone else in the world must agree with us," Clinton told the Conference Board. "And if they don't, they can go straight to hell."

Each Garofalo Award recipient will also receive a bottle of red wine vinegar to help wash down the crow dinner.

Man do I hate Bill Clinton.

Me too. Especially the runny ones that tend to leave the hang-arounds that are difficult to clean up properly. The best Clintons are come out quickly with no fuss and leave none of themselves behind, and are also small enough to be disposed of quickly with one flush.

Nice weather for this Annual Freep. Not hot, not cold, nice spring feel to the air, and the reason it didn't rain is because we had a big pile of umbrellas with us!!

Kudos to tgslTakoma for preparing the 'Garofalo crow meal' spread in front of the Washngton Hilton! She set a table, complete with tablecloth, 'silver'ware, wine glasses filled with a 'suitable' bubbly, and her masterful crow specialty on her best china. It was a repast that made the barf juices jiggle! LOL! I hope the pictures do it justice!

"Helen Thomas" caught the attention of one little lady, as she passed. She was quite vocal in her condemnation of sauropod and her defense of Helen! Actually she was pretty brave as she took us all on, shouting at everything we tossed at her. She also took exception to the "Support the Troops" sign, and made it quite clear that she did not support the troops. Feisty lady, but I wonder if her head is screwed on.

In the middle of Connecticut Ave, in front of the Hilton, is a traffic island. When you are crossing, the light is too short to cross the whole street, so you stand on this island awaiting the next light. Anyone standing on this island has no escape from Freepcalls! Last year, Ralph Nader was on this island, and at first he thought our "Thank You Ralph" chant was in recognition of him as a person. He quickly realized what our point was, but had to endure it until the light changed. The same thing happened this year! There he was, on that island, again -- listening to us and hoping the da** light would change! He did flash us a V sign. 'V' as in Peace Protest?

Mary Matelin came by and spoke to a couple of Freepers for a few moments. (no James with her) However, she left the festivities early, passing by us again, saying she had a birthday party to attend. (I like her new hair-do)

In the sport' bar at the Hilton, we had a section to ourselves. At the end of the goings-on on TV, the "Garofalo Eat Crow" awards were all spread out on a couple of tables, for picture taking. It was quite a sight to see all these dead black birds on their shiny plates! It caught the attention of all the waiters/resses. The looks on their faces was really funny. They never asked what they were all about, and I can't imagine what they were thinking!

Being in that sports bar is rather bitter sweet. For two years before 9/11 we had 2 memorable chats with Barbara and Ted Olsen.

I don't know if anyone kept a list of 'personalities we saw and Freeped. Coming to mind was Mary Matelin, Margaret Carleson, Bill Press, Senator John F. Kerry, Ralph Nader, Juan Williams, and ?????So many tinted-windowed-stretch-limos went by, that we missed many notables. However, those safely behind those tinted windows could see us and our messages. There's satisfaction in that!

I can hardly wait for the pictures!

The person in the paper bag is great, but I can't read the words in parenthesis. Do you know what they say? no idea, at all. I shrunk the size, but at regular size (and even when enlarging), I couldn't read, either. Maybe Kristinn knows.

Kristinn, the guy with the paper bag, with the "I Watch CNN" what is beneath that?

Free--- you are needed! What was the exact wording on your 'bag'. (Both front and back.) Interested Freepers want to know!

The little print at the bottom of FreeTheHostages' bag costume says: "Why Is It So Dark In Here?" FTH did a great job in her bag -- it was also quite warm inside and it was a good thing we weren't out in the hot sun!
