Gov. Janet Napolitano said Monday that she regretted the "heavy-handed" action of a top staffer whose arm-twisting phone call contributed to a political firestorm over the renaming of Squaw Peak to Piestewa Peak.

The governor chastised Deputy Chief of Staff Mario Diaz for calling a high-ranking Phoenix police officer to put pressure on the chairman of the State Board of Geographic Names.

Arizona doesn't seem to have much luck with governors for some reason.

Twenty years from now it will still be called "Squaw Peak" - as will the roads and businesses with "Squaw Peak" in their names.

Nothing but more tiresome PC bull$#!+.

Uh that isn't code for their selection of Senators is stellar is it???? <: <:
Truthfully though, given todays and recent political climates, I really find it hard to believe that
the name "Squaw" anything lasted this long.....

This was handled so poorly. The issue should have been sent to the ballot for the citizens of the state to decide. Our budget(deficit) doesn't cover the costs of signage changing much less a early primary. She has one agenda & one agenda only.

I heard someone on the radio say that probably it will be called, "Pie" Peak and Hwy. 51. Barry Markson on KFYI said he will continue to call it Squaw Peak on radio and off.

Brave soul!!

However, Heidi and Heywood already have their kneepads in place.

We have stupid Republicans living in this state who would rather vote for some 3rd party candidate and thus hand over the election to a woman democrat!!! They'll screw us again next year if we don't get rid of MCCain in the primary!

"I regret that my staff member dealt with (Detective Tim Norton, a Phoenix police officer) with a very heavy hand," Napolitano said."

So she's not sorry she did it, she's sorry that the person whose arm she was twisting put up such a fuss that she had to be "heavy handed."

Any time we get a real conservative, (Mecham, Symington) the left and the Arizona Republic run him out. If Napolitano had done this type of thing for a conservative cause, the "People's Republic" and Democratic hacks would have the recall papers ready and the GOP stiffs would impeach. That's what a corrupt state this is.

They only blew up a reporter who tried to get to the bottom of things in 1976.

"Arizonans find the name squaw offensive.

Not all Arizonans. She didn't ask me! Besides, Squaw Peak has had that name for so long, that people don't even think about what "squaw" means, or that it's supposed to be offensive (according to the PC crowd).

I tend to want to win by persuasion and by that I mean convincing people that my ideas are better.

I had a thought of Janet holding a hot branding iron over some poor soul whom she is trying to convince via persuasion that her ideas are better.

I thought the process was not reflective of my governing style. That will not happen again."

I predict her rule governorship isn't going to be rosy or guiltless.

I will never, never call it Piestewa Peak. I can accept Piestewa Parkway but it sticks in my throat. That is a sensation that will never, NEVER be felt by the estemes Ms. Napolireno.

I'm a woman, and I loved the name "Squaw Peak." Napalm sure didn't speak to me about the name change.

I think it would be lovely to have some kind of a memorial set up for our brave troops in this war. I then would like to see a Vietnam Memorial for our brave troops there. Then maybe -- this would probably be way too much -- a memorial for our WWII vets. We could put all three of them at the bottom of Squaw Peak.

While I'm on a rant, we are supposed to wait FIVE years to change the names of geological areas. But, of course, our Governor couldn't abide by rules she didn't make in the first place.

"I really find it hard to believe that

And of course you were offended by the term "Squaw" from your first hearing the word because you instinctively knew it meant ????. Now, just what was it that it means again? Who taught you the "true, secret, unspoken meaning, only known to the chosen and never revealed to Gene Autry, John Wayne, Roy Rodgers, and the entire friggin Navajo and Apache nations?"

Geee, I wish I had been told so I could now show my disgust.

There's a whole romantic story behind the name of Squaw Peak.

I guess Gov. Napalm has been around Reno too long to know anything about romance between a man and a woman.

"Squaw Peak has had that name for so long, that people don't even think about what "squaw" means, or that it's supposed to be offensive (according to the PC crowd). "

Remember that Spook Hill (out ol' Apache Junction way) was changed even though the name derives from the 1800's when the rumor was that ghosts abounded in the area.

Well, I for one am offended by the word HONK! Everyone knows it is a derisive term for white man. From now on, old "Muffy" Napolireno, the word will not be allowed. People will no longer "honk" their horn, they will rather "klinton their klaxon"!
