KARBALA, Iraq (CNN) -- Exuberant Shiite Muslim pilgrims are surging into the central Iraqi city of Karbala, reviving a religious tradition that was not allowed under Saddam Hussein's rule.
Religious leaders said the crowd could reach several million by the peak of the observance Wednesday. The pilgrims came from all over Iraq -- some walking more than 60 miles.

We're going to regret this war.
We've no idea what it is we've unleashed in this region. Geting rid of Saddam is one thing but replacing him with something more wholesome and stable is something else again.

Getting rid of Saddam is one thing but replacing him with something more wholesome and stable is something else again.I agree with your statement. Did we actually research the culture in Iraq/Arabs before we went in to liberate them? They seem extremely ungrateful for the "gift." If our government only spoke to the exiles here in the U.S. they probably got the wrong picture--the Westernized Iraqis are civil, intelligent and used to freedom. The Iraqis who have been in Iraq seem rather medieval and still longing for the oppression.

If Bush gets another 4 years, we will stand firm and ensure that what evolves is, if not totally friendly, a lot less threatening to us, the area, and its people. About the only way to go fully belly up is if a Dem gets the White House while this is in the formative stages - then, all bets are off.

We have to prevent the mullahs from hijacking the US victory, as was the case in Iran when Khomeni seized power from the Iranian intellectuals and bazaar merchants. We should stop being so deferential to the mullahs and put them in their place early on. No doubt Iran is supporting the clerics nefariously.

I think this is the Arab world's last chance, and I am disturbed by their stupidity. While CNN may want to emphasize the fears of Christians, it's the Sunni who have most to fear, as they are perceived as a bigger threat. Could well be a huge civil war.
By "last chance", I mean this should be the last time we bother to fight a "nice" war of liberation - next time they threaten us, we just carpet bomb them into oblivion. If they can't live together in peace, f**k 'em.
I think we need some politicians in Iraq, not generals. We need to show some guile and out-maneuver these assholes.

earlier chants of "No to America, No to Israel, No to the Devil" gave way to "Death to America. Death to Israel."
Ah! The sweet sounds of a liberated people! I wonder what explanation will be offered by those who thought that we could use military force to create a democratic pro-western ally in the Middle East.

You continue to disappoint me, marshmallow.
A free Iraq will not necessarily be a pretty Iraq, but freeing these people from a jackbooted fascist was morally the right thing to do.
As we see even today, many of the Germans continue to be repulsive ingrates, but their current form of government and the state of their civil society is vastly superior now to the way it was in 1945.

I don't see why this is any big deal. It could just as easily read as follows...
Anti-Bush Leftists Flock to San Francisco ("Death to America")
CNN ^ | 4/22/03
KARBALA, Iraq (CNN) -- Exuberant American Leftists are surging into the central CA city of San Francisco, reviving a political tradition that was not necessary under bill clinton's rule.
Many protesters expressed gratitude for their newfound political activism but also called for the United States to leave Iraq. The political fervor of the crowd intensified Tuesday -- earlier chants of "No to America, No to Israel, No to the Devil" gave way to "Death to America. Death to Israel."

What an extremely subtle analysis!
You know, there were tens of thousands of anti-war protestors in NYC a few weeks back - they were chanting 'Impeach Bush' and 'No Blood For Oil'.
I guess that means that the vast majority of US citizens are revolutionary Trotskyites, that 90% of Americans are deathly opposed to the Bush administration and that no one supported the war.

Actually, while we have all the basturds in one place, a couple CBU's are completely appropriate.
Time to stop pussy-footing with these people.
Sorry, had to get that off my chest. But - you see how Europe's fairing after pandering to these people.

I agree with your statement. Did we actually research the culture in Iraq/Arabs before we went in to liberate them? They seem extremely ungrateful for the "gift."I find you guilty of believing something posted from CNN and sentence you to reread the article and locate where CNN tells us HOW MANY of these "pilgrims" were exercizing their newfound freedom to protest in the streets.
Part Two is to identify WHY CNN chose not to put a number to this "crowd."

This must be CNN propaganda. Where are the loving crowds kissing our soldiers? (/sarcasm)
As evil as Saddam was, his regime was secular and in some ways progressive--at least he was perceived by our government as preferable to his neighbors and worthy of support. Now the mullahs, long suppressed by Saddam, will come into their own.
By the way, what ever happened to Osama bin Laden?

We're going to regret this war.
No, though we will one day regret not sufficiently grasping that we are at war with Islam, not simply "extremists," or "Arab Nationalists."
To: marshmallow
We're going to regret this war.No we aren't! It's the BEST thing we could've done. We just need to realize that it is going to take a lot more to stabilize with a representative government than it did to take down Saddam. The Shiites will have to come to terms with this sooner or later. Better sooner! Later it will just me that much more difficult.
Their antics are quite ignorant and arrogant. Imagine if the American military marched down the streets of Basrah with tanks and guns chanting "Death to Shia". There would be an uproar. Especially on the left. Why isn't there an uproar when these ingrates mouth off with their hatespeak?
To: linn37
Looks like theres some agitation going on. Find out who and and thump some sense into him. For all we know, these "pilgrimages" are financed by International ANSWER.
You would think after the events of the last year that anyone who is paying attention would not believe or try to assert that a street protest signified anything but extremist fringe politics...ESPECIALLY when it is reported by CNN.

Question: What happens when democracy happens in a country with a 60% Shite Muslim population? Does the majority get to choose their government?

The overwhelming majority of Iraq's Muslim population is Shiite. I just think that those who backed Bush 110 percent have been a little hasty in declaring this an all-out success. Nation-building in Iraq will not be the same as it was in post-WWII Germany or Japan.
