The label says 2.6. Not much less than Miller Lite. But tastes a helluva lot better. IMHO. As for effectiveness as an alcoholic beverage...its verrrry smooth thus its pretty easy to lose track of the number you've had. If you are inclined to do so. So quite effective :)

I've had infinitely better luck at keeping track of the quarters on the pool table than I've had counting Bud Lights. I may give the Ultra a try just for fun. Its always good to have a couple of brands that can be called upon when visiting unfamiliar places.

What is "1 carb"? And how many calories does "1 carb" have? Are you saying that one cup of coffee or a couple of shots of espresso (black--without sugar and/or cream)--is 1 carb? I can understand if you load it down with milk/sugar/chocolate syrup/etc., but I believe black coffee is essentially zero calories.

Maven, that was a great post. You have a lot of insight into this diet controversy.

I became interested in the Atkins diet maybe 20 years ago, and have since read about and experimented with dozens of variations on the low carb theme. After all these years, I've come to the conclusion the Atkins induction diet is safe and effective for weight loss, and in my own case, it increases my energy. Beyond short-term weight loss, looking at longer term maintenance nutrition, I lean slightly toward non-ketogenic versions of low-carb diets, such as the so-called Neanderthal diet, Paleolithic diet, and numerous variations of those.
I think the verdict is still out on which version of the low carb diet is best, and particularly whether the long term diet should be ketogenic or not. The Atkins maintenance diet is intended to keep one "slightly" in ketosis--the other diets I mentioned are definitely low carb, but not ketogenic.
I also am interested in D'Adamo's theories about blood type and diet. Fortunately, I am type O, and according to D'Adamo, Type Os should be eating low carb diets, restricting grains severely because of their harmful lectins.
What I AM convinced of is that Dr. Robert Atkins was a true pioneer, and a courageous man, for sticking to his views in the face of a lot of flack coming from every direction of conventional medicine. I got sick of hearing for many years about how my cholesterol will soar (it is about 160, well within the acceptable range, down from 220 before the diet), my blood pressure will soar (mine dropped about 30 points on both the systolic and diastolic), so I can imagine how frustrating it must have been for Atkins to listen to the "experts" criticize him for 30 years. I am pleased to realize that at least he died knowing that millions of people have gotten their health back by virtue of his insights. Whether we ultimately come to believe that the ketogenic diet is healthy long term or not, we all owe Dr. Atkins a huge debt for his brilliant recognition that EXCESSIVE CONSUMPTION of carbohydrates, particularly refined ones, has been the downfall of modern man's health.
R.I.P. Dr. Atkins. My hat is off to you.

One gram of carbohydrate is about 4 calories.

One cup (8 ounces) of coffee has 4.74 calories and .948 gram of carbohydrate. Two ounces (shots) of espresso have about 5.33 calories and .906 gram of carbohydrate.

Other than that, how was it?

I lost 37 lbs in about 3-4 months last year and feel better than I have in almost 20 years. Best thing I ever did was to make a serious attempt at this diet and stick with it.

The Neanderthal/Paleolithic diet certainly allows for more fruit, but no dairy. If you have problems with dairy products, Neanderthal is definitely an option to look at.

There are several variations of low carb, each of which may work for different health problems. Often, people come into ASDLC (the Usenet newsgroup for low carbers) with complaints of celiac, IBS, Crohn's, etc., and I recommend they look at the Specific Carbohydrate Diet, which doesn't necessarily have to be low carb (although many SCD followers low carb as well - they call it "SCAtkins."

I also am interested in D'Adamo's theories about blood type and diet. Fortunately, I am type O, and according to D'Adamo, Type Os should be eating low carb diets, restricting grains severely because of their harmful lectins.

Low carbing has a lot of good science behind it, but I'm not so sure about the blood type stuff - it's more conjecture than science, isn't it? While many low carbers are Type Os, there are a lot who aren't, and it works for them, too.

Yeah, right. Reduce your chance of dying in a given year from a stroke, and increase the chances of dying by a whole host of other things in that same year by multiples.

There never was any real evidence that this would work...just anecdotal stuff on Brazillian Indians.

And how do you work 'beer' into an Atkin's diet?

Michelob Ultra has 2.6 Grams of carbs per bottle.

On the other hand, most hard liquor has no carbs. Just avoid the sweet girly drinks.

The Atkins Diet is also "hostile" towards beer and wine. I say hostile because while the diet in its maintenance phase allows for one glass a day of either, it's author (Atkins) is a teetolaer and recommends that alcoholic beverages not be consumed at all.

I heard him interviewed just a few months ago, and the host (maybe LK, can't remember now) asked him about drinking and he said he drank I believe it was vodka or scotch. I just can't remember more of it, but he didn't say at all that he didn't drink.
