What is "1 carb"?

It means 1 gram of carbohydrate.

And how many calories does "1 carb" have?

One gram of carbohydrate is about 4 calories.

Are you saying that one cup of coffee or a couple of shots of espresso (black--without sugar and/or cream)--is 1 carb? I can understand if you load it down with milk/sugar/chocolate syrup/etc., but I believe black coffee is essentially zero calories.

One cup (8 ounces) of coffee has 4.74 calories and .948 gram of carbohydrate. Two ounces (shots) of espresso have about 5.33 calories and .906 gram of carbohydrate.

You can find all this stuff out for yourself right here: The USDA National Nutrient Database

Thanks. I guess that makes sense--very few calories, but calories nonetheless.
