Seven of the flags were slashed Thursday at random locations throughout Houlton, apparently with a knife or razor, said Police Chief Daniel Soucy.

That's pretty much what the French police are saying about the attacks on Jews and the firebombing of synagogues there.
Yes! And it sounds like more then one, to me!
Totally disgusting. I had one lawmaker recently email me that Maine is becoming so bad, NO ONE will want to come here. I believe it!!!
It's not quite that bad yet. Unlike us, your state hasn't driven away it's largest and most recognized employer like we've done. Boeing is now based in Chicago.
Second biggest employer in Maine: Eastern Maine Medical Center, thriving on Medicare and Medicaide.
Largest private industry in Maine, the paper industry: leaving in droves.
Champion Paper in Bucksport is moving its largest machine to New York to get away from Maine's taxes (Maine taxes capital equipment at one of the highest rates in the nation).
James River mill in Old Town laying off half its crew.
Millinocket closing down completely.
East Millinocket laying off half its crew.
Large companies in Maine that do not do business with the government are screwed.
Changing the subject completely but has there been any sort of "morning after" after Boing pulled out? You know, where people (esp. in government) wake up, fully sober and wonder, "What happened???" or does Seattle continue to laugh and play?
Same here. Timber indusrty has been in a funk sine the spotted owl listing, hasn't recovered one iota. Boeing gone, Alcoa & Reynolds Aluminum gone, Non-tribal fishing bad, and Microsoft hires only from the HI-B pool locally because our schools produce dummies.
Military spending strong. Not enough, however. We are still #2 on the unemployment list nationwide.

1. Markings. Place or cause to be placed any word, figure, mark, picture, design, drawing or advertisement of any nature upon any flag, standard, color, ensign or shield of the United States or of this State, or authorized by any law of the United States or of this State; or
2. Expose to public view. Expose to public view any such flag, standard, color, ensign or shield upon which shall have been printed, painted or otherwise produced, or to which shall have been attached, appended, affixed or annexed any such word, figure, mark, picture, design, drawing or advertisement; or
3. Merchandise. Expose to public view for sale, manufacture or otherwise, or to sell, give or have in possession for sale, for gift or for use for any purpose, any substance, being an article of merchandise, or receptacle, or thing for holding or carrying merchandise, upon or to which shall have been produced or attached any such flag, standard, color, ensign or shield, in order to advertise, call attention to, decorate, mark or distinguish such article or substance.Any violation of this section shall be a civil violation for which a forfeiture not to exceed $50 may be adjudged. [1977, c. 696, § 7 (rpr).]
They are still playing the fiddle, ala Nero. Since Boeing left they have passed an odious union inspired ergonomics law and now are working on a huge tax increase that is citizen initiative proof. They just don't get it. Hopefully the citizens will, come November 2004.
More great publicity for Maine, huh?

Government never "gets it", they just blame private industry or corporate chieftains. The response is always the same. In desperation, they start buying billboards and advertising. When you see a billboard for a town/city/state, you know they are trying to lure you into a trap. Nobody in their right mind will go there. Any businessperson knows that Eldorado needs no advertising, Hell - on the other hand - does.
Then, they will "invest" tax money in some ill conceived scheme by other bureaucrats, and blame the market when it fails.
They will never "get it". Goodbye Maine.
Tax breaks, pollution breaks, etc.
