In Baghdad, A Top Video Rental Is Gibson's 'The Patriot'
People in Baghdad have been spending their evenings watching Hollywood action movies as their city is being pounded by American bombs and artillery, according to an article appearing in Rupert Murdoch's Australian newspapers.
News Limited papers reported today (Tuesday) that a favorite is the Mel Gibson movie The Patriot, in which Gibson plays a revolutionary war figure who reluctantly takes up arms against the British.
One video dealer remarked, "During an evening of air strikes, provided there's electricity, customers want to wind down and be taken in by a story in which the good triumph over the evil, like us against the Americans."

I heard a group of young people, Americans and Arabs, who were having a dialog about America and how to learn about us. One girl said she rents American videos.
Yeah, that really nails us down.

You know I imagined that "The Patriot" would have been a good movie to show Afghanis as we removed the Taliban from their country. I've been having that thought for months now.

I'll bet I couldn't even get through an Arabian movie, especially it there anything like the Indian music videos I see on TV once in a while.

I thought it was pretty good. Some of the battle scenes weren't realistic and I didn't like one of the main characters' wife being burnt alive in the Church with the townsfolk, but "I was entertained".

I liked the movie! It was inspiring.

and be taken in by a story in which the good triumph over the evil, like us against the Americans. It's a shame that this is his view. How will a republic flourish in a country that doesn't appreciate it? How can freedom take root in a country that doesn't have a George Washington figure, or a comparable citizenry to that portrayed in The Patriot and our history, but is instead liberated by someone else?
There's no doubt we're doing the right thing by liberating them from this oppressive regime. What will they do once we're gone?

"The Patriot" has worked wonders with most of America's young adults, especially the home-schooled ones.

Is this the Saudi-censored version of the video? If so, they'll miss out on a lot.
I once rented the Saudi-censored version of Tom Hanks' "Bachelor Party. I think they just spliced the beginning credits to the end credits. The whole video lasted about five minutes!
Once I got back to The Land of the Big PX, you know which video I rented first!

The whole church inferno scene has no basis in history and was in fact adapted from Nazi atrocities. The main antagonist of the film was also a vilified to a ridiculous degree.

Great movie....THE PATRIOT. Free of trashy sex, dirty language..amazing it made the big screen.
It is one of the few R-rated movies I have seen in the last 5 years.
Unbelievable....did you know why this movie was rated R??? I was told that it is because it had KIDS...WITH....GUNS....horrors.
