BAGHDAD (AFP) - More than 100 children held in a prison celebrated their freedom Tuesday as US marines rolled into northeast Baghdad amid chaotic scenes which saw civilians loot weapons from an army compound, a US officer said. Around 150 children spilled out of the jail after the gates were opened as a US military Humvee vehicle approached, Lieutenant Colonel Fred Padilla told an AFP correspondent travelling with the Marines 5th Regiment.
"Hundreds of kids were swarming us and kissing us," Padilla said.
"There were parents running up, so happy to have their kids back."
"The children had been imprisoned because they had not joined the youth branch of the Baath party," he alleged. "Some of these kids had been in there for five years."
The children, who were wearing threadbare clothes and looked under-nourished, walked on the streets crossing their hands as if to mimic handcuffs, before giving the thumbs up sign and shouting their thanks.
It was not clear who had opened the doors of the prison.
Civilians also took advantage of the collapse of Iraqi President Saddam Hussein's authority to grab weapons from an army base, said Group Sergeant Jeff Treiber.
As marines were alerted by radio that civilians had seized weapons, Treiber warned that anyone seen to be armed could be a target of US-British coalition forces.
"With the weapons they are becoming combatants," said Treiber. "If they don't take the weapons they will be fine."
Other residents stole air conditioning units, television sets and furniture from government buildings in an echo of the looting that was seen in the southern city of Basra.
A 19-year-old called Haider said people had been ransacking government compounds since the morning to steal weapons and furniture.
"Since the morning, nine o'clock, they have been looting. They are stealing weapons and I took three doors," he said.
At one stage the marines opened fire after coming under attack from snipers, leaving at least two civilians wounded.
One man needed treatment for gunshot wounds to his stomach and left arm.
But his friend, Abdul Amir Jaffa, said he did not resent the Americans despite the shooting.
"Americans are coming to free us," he told AFP.
The marines became increasingly edgy as crowds of people took to the streets to observe their progress.
"It's a problem with so many people in the area. Its hard to tell if there are enemy forces among them. You have to be careful returning fire with civilians all over the place," Lieutenant Anthony Sousa said.
Troops from the Marines' 1st Expeditionary Force also entered Baghdad on the east of the city Tuesday as thousands of armoured vehicles and Humvees poured into the capital for a showdown with Saddam Hussein's troops.

If President Bush is for it, they're against it. Pretty much the case. I just told this story, about the Marines liberating a children's prison, to a Liberal associate of mine here in the office, and his retort to me was "Yeah? Well did you hear that last night a Marine shot and killed a 10-year old???"
My jaw dropped. There's just no getting through to these people.

Please excuse me, but I must correct your language.
As far as the Sarandon types are concerned.....if the Iraqi's didn't do anything to her personally, then it's none of our business what they do to their own citizens subjects.
Iraq has no citizens. A person who is a citizen has a say in how their country is governed. Up to now, the proper descriptive term for inhabitants of Iraq is "subjects", as in "subjects of Saddam Hussein".
Currently, the population of Iraq is in transition. Very soon, they will necessarily become subjects of an occupation force. Hopefully soon after that, they will become citizens of a free Iraq.

We could have dissolved the old coalition and created a new one. We are responsible for the deaths of Iraqis who opposed Hussein and were killed by helicopter gunships we allowed to fly. Bush 41 should apologize for it.

what kind of creep puts little kids in jail? That's what I used to wonder when I was in junior high...

Thank you so much for your willingness to do this! I've given 68-69TonkinGulfYatchClub a heads up at #108 to see if he can get an address for the letters.

Dumbocrat Underground is mostly denying this sick sick act. The only media they believe in Iraq is Robert Fisk.

Bush 41 did put together the coalition that forced Iraq out of Kuwait, imposed the no-fly zones, and reduced Saddam's threat to the region somewhat -- although I do fault him for not going all the way to Baghdad and finishing the job he started. He did finish the job he started. People just wanted to expand the original mission.

Remember, Scott Ritter told us about these kids prisons. He wouldn't go into detail because, he said, he didn't support the war.Kids in prison, huh? Now we know Ritter's payment for spouting his anti-war tripe. I don't mean to sound facetious, but Hussein is that low, and I would never trust someone as immoral and dumb (regarding sex and the underaged) as Ritter who arranged over the Internet to meet girls at a local fast-food restaraunt.
To: Miss Marple
Disgusting, and the left should have NO credibility after this. Also, you know darn well those kids were let loose so that there wouldn't be any photos of them IN prison.
To set the captive free...a mission worthy of a good and great nation.

I already knew about children in prison....however, the one I knew about must be a different prision. Scott Ritter said the children about whom he saw in prison were there because their parents spoke out against Saddam Hussein. The children in this article were there because they refused to become members of the Ba'athe (sp?) party. Look for more freed children, in another prison, soon.

Probably like a scene right out of "Indiana Jones" where he and the Chinese kid go in and free all those youths subjected to slave labour... Which just convinces me even more that 'Baghdad Bob' is really just the alter ego of that Thugee High Priest, Mola Rom...
The similarity is eerie. Just add glasses, a receeding hairline wig, and a beret, and you get ...

OK, eventually you'll understand what most people here at FR already have-- that we will never be safe and truly free until the world is free. NK, USSR, Nazi Germany, the Empire of Japan, Fascist Italy, Taliban Afghanistan, etc.-- they all hated liberty. That's the one connection to all of them. Even in France you can't insult Chirac without being fined.
