Jailed Iraqi children run free as Marines roll into Baghdad suburbs

BAGHDAD (AFP) - More than 100 children held in a prison celebrated their freedom Tuesday as US marines rolled into northeast Baghdad amid chaotic scenes which saw civilians loot weapons from an army compound, a US officer said.

Around 150 children spilled out of the jail after the gates were opened as a US military Humvee vehicle approached, Lieutenant Colonel Fred Padilla told an AFP correspondent travelling with the Marines 5th Regiment.

"Hundreds of kids were swarming us and kissing us," Padilla said.

"There were parents running up, so happy to have their kids back."

"The children had been imprisoned because they had not joined the youth branch of the Baath party," he alleged. "Some of these kids had been in there for five years."

The children, who were wearing threadbare clothes and looked under-nourished, walked on the streets crossing their hands as if to mimic handcuffs, before giving the thumbs up sign and shouting their thanks.

It was not clear who had opened the doors of the prison.

Civilians also took advantage of the collapse of Iraqi President Saddam Hussein's authority to grab weapons from an army base, said Group Sergeant Jeff Treiber.

As marines were alerted by radio that civilians had seized weapons, Treiber warned that anyone seen to be armed could be a target of US-British coalition forces.

"With the weapons they are becoming combatants," said Treiber. "If they don't take the weapons they will be fine."

Other residents stole air conditioning units, television sets and furniture from government buildings in an echo of the looting that was seen in the southern city of Basra.

A 19-year-old called Haider said people had been ransacking government compounds since the morning to steal weapons and furniture.

"Since the morning, nine o'clock, they have been looting. They are stealing weapons and I took three doors," he said.

At one stage the marines opened fire after coming under attack from snipers, leaving at least two civilians wounded.

One man needed treatment for gunshot wounds to his stomach and left arm.

But his friend, Abdul Amir Jaffa, said he did not resent the Americans despite the shooting.

"Americans are coming to free us," he told AFP.

The marines became increasingly edgy as crowds of people took to the streets to observe their progress.

"It's a problem with so many people in the area. Its hard to tell if there are enemy forces among them. You have to be careful returning fire with civilians all over the place," Lieutenant Anthony Sousa said.

Troops from the Marines' 1st Expeditionary Force also entered Baghdad on the east of the city Tuesday as thousands of armoured vehicles and Humvees poured into the capital for a showdown with Saddam Hussein's troops.

...So my question is should we also hold people like Dick Cheney just as accountable for what he was involved to keep this regime alive when Bush 41 was president?...

Interesting question. You could make the argument that the GHW Bush administration left office under the illusion that conditions were set to ultimately cause regime change in Iraq (sanctions, inspections, etc.) that were later watered down by the "international community" and the clinton administration.

You could also make the argument that the idea of "regime change" in Iraq was never official US policy until 1998. Similarlly, the idea of pre-emptive strikes was not official US policy until 2002. Indeed, most folks in the pre-911 world were averse to the idea of America being the worlds police force (myself included).

Ultimately, I believe a close look at the pro/con arguments used TODAY determine how I would answer your question. The folks who supported the President recognized the threat, and accepted that SH was evil to his own people and would not hesitate to transfer that evil to terrorists who could target Americans. Those who were against the war (largely the anti-Bush left) would universally open their argument against regime change by saying something like, "of course everyone knows Saddam is an evil dictator, but...".

Therefore, those on the left who gave tacit support to Saddam are much more responsible for the attrocities in Iraq based on history and logic. IMO.

As far as the Sarandon types are concerned.....if the Iraqi's didn't do anything to her personally, then it's none of our business what they do to their own citizens

It's not a viewpoint they held regarding apartheid South Africa

I wonder if they would have made the same argument regarding Nazi Germany?

Well this doesn't surprise us. I would love to be there with photos of the Predator Ritter to show these kids to find out what they know about him.

I am surprised.

... you are blessed to have the level of naivete/innocence that the rest of us have lost in coming to grips with real evil.

That's not an insult - just that you are lucky to have not imagined this level of evil to be possible... and believe me... the rabbit hole goes deeper.

"Remember that all I am offering is the truth. Nothing more." "You take the blue pill and the story ends. You wake in your bed and you believe whatever you want to believe." "You take the red pill and you stay in Wonderland and I show you how deep the rabbit-hole goes."

Hey Lefties -- it's not about oil, it's about the children, see? If you had any sense of decency, and any consistency, you would immediately come on board in light of this circumstance.

That said, I don't see any of you coming on board.

Tonk, can you help us???

I offered this:

My husband suggested that some of the children here in the United States (Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts perhaps) - ought to write letters and draw pictures to the Iraqi children. They wouldn't be able to read the words, but the kids might like to make the connection.

gura, TxBec and TLBSHOW - and perhaps others - would be interested in doing something. Do you have an address for us???

saddam's Iraq was a living hell and had the overt support of France, Germany, Russia, and the left in the US.

Typical liberal -- children don't matter if it doesn't suit their purposes. They're nothing but objects to be used at will. It infuriates me, and yet somehow sickens me at the same time.

There is only one viewpoint that propells those types:

If President Bush is for it, they're against it.

Hi, Dog! I knew about this from researching Scott Ritter. I was waiting to see if there would be news of this. I wonder why he was really AT the children's prison, and if he inspected it with other members of his team, or if he really went all by himself.

Disgusting, and the left should have NO credibility after this. Also, you know darn well those kids were let loose so that there wouldn't be any photos of them IN prison.

To set the captive free...a mission worthy of a good and great nation.

If he knew this, then the other inspectors and Hans Blix knew about it. The UN knew about it. Reporters around the world knew about the evil of this regime and would not tell the world!

Perhaps Saddam had pictures of them enjoying themselves Ritteresquely at the Childrens' Prison.

I'll don the flamesuit. Its not our problem if Sadaam does these and other atrocities. Once he starts developing WMD, threatening our oil supply and hanging out with terrorists then he should be eliminated. But it shouldn't be the job of our armed forces to destroy every tin pot dictator on earth. The men and women of the armed forces sign up to defend their homes and families. Period.
