Cowboys really did sing cowboy songs to the cattle at night. Singing songs like "Old Dan Tucker," "Nearer My God To Thee," "In the Sweet By and By" or "The Texas Lullaby" soothed jittery cows, which helped reduce the likelihood of stampede. Thunder and lightning were the most common cause of stampede. The Prayer and song below tell of a "free" life entwined in nature and work.

COWBOYS' PRAYER (Badger Clark, 1906) O Lord, I've never lived where churches grow: I've loved creation better as it stood That day you finished it, so long ago. And looked upon your work and called it good. Just let me live my life as I've begun! And give me work that's open to the sky; Make me a partner to the wind and sun And I won't ask a life that's soft and high. Make me as big and open as the plains; As honest as the horse between my knees; Clean as the wind that blows behind the rains; Free as the hawk that circles down the breeze. Just keep an eye on all that's done and said; Just right me sometime when I turn aside; And guide me on the long, dim tail ahead -- That stretches upward towards the Great Divide. |
O BURY ME From a poem by Edwin H. Chapin originally used as an elegy for burials at sea, adapted for Cowboy burials on the "Sea of Grass" "Oh, bury me not on the Lone Prairie;" These words came sad and mournfully From the pallid lips of a youth who lay On his dying bed at the close of day. "It matters not, so I've been told Where the body lies when the heart grows cold, But grant, oh grant, this wish to me; Bury me not on the Lone Prairie." "Bury me not on the Lone Prairie. Where coyotes howl and the wind blows free, In a narrow grave, six by three; Oh, Bury me not on the Lone Prairie." "Oh, Bury me not..." His voice failed there; We took no heed of his dying prayer. In a narrow grave, six by three, We buried him there on the Lone Prairie. And the Cowboys now, as they roam the Plains, They mark the spot where his bones were lain; Fling a handful of roses o'er his grave With a prayer to God his soul to save. |

File under, Don't do this!
Man tries holdup, gets laughed out of bank
Associated Press
Published April 8, 2003
PINE BLUFF, Ark. -- Police say they aren't sure what charge is appropriate for a man arrested after tellers laughed him out of a bank he apparently tried to rob.
The man entered a branch of the Bank of America about 10 a.m. Monday, with a trash bag in one hand and the other in a pocket, authorities said.
``Put the money in the bag,'' he demanded.
Instead, one of the two tellers told him the bank was out of money, and the other teller laughed and offered the man deposit slips. She told police that made the intruder angry, and he left without any money in his bag.
Minutes after tellers alerted authorities, a Jefferson County sheriff's deputy picked up Julius Kearney, 23, of Little Rock, as he walked nearby. Kearney was arrested after witnesses in the bank identified him as the man with the trash bag, police said.
No weapon was found, and the man at the bank never threatened anybody, so police are unsure how the case will be handled.
``Technically, it could be robbery, and since it is in a bank, the FBI might also have some regulations about what we can charge him with,'' said police spokesman Robert Rawlinson.
``Either he'll be (in jail) or we will put him in for mental evaluation,'' Rawlinson said. ``He's not just going to be released.''

Ok, while supper cooks, I thought I'd let y'all know how things went at the Cruise-in our car club sponsored this oast weekend.
The weather couldn't have been finer, sunny and warm, and this brought out the crowds in droves. Lots of FINE autos were shown, some classics, some newer, but all beautiful. We as a club, had decided to help out the troops in some way and the final decision was to help out the families of our local National Guard. With the men and women of the unit deployed, their families can use a little help with bills. So we set up a table to take donations from folks who showed up that afternoon and took in around $750. We'll do this at all our cruise-ins and our car show as long as the war lasts. Our little contribution of support for our troops.
Here's a shot of some of the cars shown Sat. afternoon:
Our '63 Plymouth Sport Fury....I like this little sweetie a lot!
My hubby snuck a shot of me standing by the table we'd set up for donations. Too bad the pattern on the table cloth isn't more evident....it's American flags and eagles:
I wasn't kidding about my poodle skirt and saddle shoes! LOL!! That large white thing hanging around my neck was a credential holder, and in it I had a slip of paper with the names of all my pen pals overseas typed in red and blue. They had to be represented, y'know? *grin*
Perfect timing. Got this done and supper is ready. Be back shortly.

Good Morning , All!
Should Have Been A Cowboy
Toby Keith
I bet you've never heard ole Marshall Dillion say
Miss Kitty have you ever thought of running away
Settling down will you marry me
If I asked you twice and begged you pretty please
She'd of said Yes in a New York minute
They never tied the knot
His heart wasn't in it
Stole a kiss as he road away
He never hung his hat up at Kitty's place
I should've been a Cowboy
I should'be learned to rope and ride
Wearing my six-shooter riding by pony on a cattle drive
Stealing the young girl's hearts
Just like Gene and Roy
Singing those campfire songs
I should've been a cowboy
I might of had a side kick with a funny name
Running wild through the hills chasing Jesse James
Ending up on the brink of danger
Riding shotgun for the Texas Rangers
Go west yound man, haven't you been told
California's full of whisky, women and gold
Sleeping out all night beneath the Texas stars
Dream in my eye and a prayer in my heart
I should've been a Cowboy
I should'be learned to rope and ride
Wearing my six-shooter riding by pony on a cattle drive
Stealing the young girl's hearts
Just like Gene and Roy
Singing those campfire songs
I should've been a cowboy
(Sigh) Nice thoughts. Hard to hit the trail inside a cubicle!
