Cowboys really did sing cowboy songs to the cattle at night. Singing songs like "Old Dan Tucker," "Nearer My God To Thee," "In the Sweet By and By" or "The Texas Lullaby" soothed jittery cows, which helped reduce the likelihood of stampede. Thunder and lightning were the most common cause of stampede.

The Prayer and song below tell of a "free" life entwined in nature and work.

COWBOYS' PRAYER
(Badger Clark, 1906)

O Lord, I've never lived where churches grow:
I've loved creation better as it stood
That day you finished it, so long ago.
And looked upon your work and called it good.

Just let me live my life as I've begun!
And give me work that's open to the sky;
Make me a partner to the wind and sun
And I won't ask a life that's soft and high.

Make me as big and open as the plains;
As honest as the horse between my knees;
Clean as the wind that blows behind the rains;
Free as the hawk that circles down the breeze.

Just keep an eye on all that's done and said;
Just right me sometime when I turn aside;
And guide me on the long, dim tail ahead --
That stretches upward towards the Great Divide.

O BURY ME
From a poem by Edwin H. Chapin originally used as an elegy for burials at sea, adapted for Cowboy burials on the "Sea of Grass"

"Oh, bury me not on the Lone Prairie;"
These words came sad and mournfully
From the pallid lips of a youth who lay
On his dying bed at the close of day.

"It matters not, so I've been told
Where the body lies when the heart grows cold,
But grant, oh grant, this wish to me;
Bury me not on the Lone Prairie."

"Bury me not on the Lone Prairie.
Where coyotes howl and the wind blows free,
In a narrow grave, six by three;
Oh, Bury me not on the Lone Prairie."

"Oh, Bury me not..." His voice failed there;
We took no heed of his dying prayer.
In a narrow grave, six by three,
We buried him there on the Lone Prairie.

And the Cowboys now, as they roam the Plains,
They mark the spot where his bones were lain;
Fling a handful of roses o'er his grave
With a prayer to God his soul to save.

Good Morning, everyone! I'll see ya all later, tonight!!!Have a wonderful Tuesday!

I want you to close your eyes and picture in your mind the soldier at Valley Forge, as he holds his musket in his bloody hands.

He stands barefoot in the snow, starved from lack of food, wounded from months of battle and emotionally scarred from the eternity away from his family surrounded by nothing but death and carnage of war.

He stands tough, with fire in his eyes and victory on his
breath.

He looks at us now in anger and disgust and tells us this...

I gave you a birthright of freedom born in the Constitution and now your children graduate too illiterate to read it.

I fought in the snow barefoot to give you the freedom to vote and you stay at home because it rains.

I left my family destitute to give you the freedom of speech and you remain silent on critical issues, because it might be bad for business.

I orphaned my children to give you a government to serve you and it has stolen democracy from the people.

It's the soldier not the reporter who gives you the freedom of the press.

It's the soldier not the poet who gives you the freedom of speech.

It's the soldier not the campus organizer who allows you to demonstrate.

It's the soldier who salutes the flag, serves the flag, whose coffin is draped with the flag that allows the protester to burn the flag!!!

"Lord, hold our troops in your loving hands. Protect them as they protect us. Bless them and their families for the selfless acts they perform for us in our time of need. Amen."

Today's FEEBLE attempt at humor:

The driver of a tractor trailer lost control of his rig, plowed into an
empty tollbooth and smashed it to pieces. He climbed down from the
wreckage and looked around. Within a matter of minutes, another truck
pulled up and unloaded a crew of workers.

The men picked up each broken piece of the former tollbooth and spread
some kind of creamy substance on it, then they began fitting the pieces
together. In less than a half hour, they had the entire tollbooth
reconstructed and good as new.

"Astonishing!" the truck driver said to the crew chief. "What was that
white stuff you used to get all of the pieces together?"

The crew chief said, "Oh, that was tollgate booth paste."

Ah, perfect timing. This is what I just received via email:

Our President... A Cowboy They call my president a Cowboy... It once ticked me off when the Muslim detractors in the Middle East, or the socialist detractors in Europe, Hollywood and other cesspools of America called my President a cowboy, but the more I think about it, the more glad I am that he is. When I was a kid, cowboys were my heroes. Well, I mean the ones in the white hats, not the black hats, who were the bad guys. There was Tom Mix, Buck Jones, Johnny Mack Brown, Hopalong Cassidy, Red Ryder, Gene Autry, Roy Rogers, then later Marshall Matt Dillon, and others. Personally, I think Gene Autry could beat 'em all up, and then sing a song afterward to his girl friend. He was my favorite. What were common attributes of these legendary cowboys? Here are a few: 1. They were never looking for trouble. 2. But when it came, they faced it with courage. 3. They were always on the side of right. 4. They defended good people against bad people. 5. They had high morals. 6. They had good manners. 7. They were honest. 8. They spoke their minds and they spoke the truth, regardless of what people thought or "political correctness," which no one had ever heard of back then. 9. They were a beacon of integrity in the wild, wild West. 10. They were respected. When they walked into a saloon (where they usually drank only sarsaparilla), the place became quiet, and the bad guys kept their distance. 11. If in a gunfight, they could outdraw anyone. If in a fist fight, they could beat up anyone. 12. They always won. They always got their man. In victory, they rode off into the sunset. Those were the days when there was such a thing as right and wrong, something blurred in our modern world, and denied by many. Those were the days when women were respected and treated as ladies, because they acted like ladies. Now as a senior citizen, I still like cowboys. They represent something good -- something pure that America has been missing. Ronald Reagan was a "cowboy", who was brave, positive, and who gave us hope. He wore a "white hat". (Any good fan of the old western movies knows a man in a "white hat" is a "good guy".) To the consternation of his liberal critics, he had the courage to call a spade a spade and call the former Soviet Union what it was -- the evil empire. Liberals hated Ronald Reagan. They also hate President Bush because he distinguishes between good and evil. He calls a spade a spade, and after 9-11 called evil "evil," without mincing any words, to the shock of the liberal establishment. That's what cowboys do, you know. He also told the French to "put their cards on the table" (old West talk), which they did, exposing their cowardice and greed. The Arabs are wrong. In the old West, "might" did not make right. Right made right. Cowboys in white hats were always on the side of right, and that was their might. I am glad my President is a cowboy. He'll get his man. "Cowboys" do, you know...

Dear Lord,

There's a young man far from home,
called to serve his nation in time of war;
sent to defend our freedom
on some distant foreign shore.

We pray You keep him safe,
we pray You keep him strong,
we pray You send him safely home ...
for he's been away so long.

There's a young woman far from home,
serving her nation with pride.
Her step is strong, her step is sure,
there is courage in every stride.
We pray You keep her safe,
we pray You keep her strong,
we pray You send her safely home ...
for she's been away too long.

Bless those who await their safe return.
Bless those who mourn the lost.
Bless those who serve this country well,
no matter what the cost.

I received this in an e-mail from a Marine friend of mine.

LESSON TO MY SON
by A PROUD AMERICAN, Irma S. Chambers

The other day, my nine year old son wanted to know why we were at war. My husband looked at our son and then looked at me. My husband and I were in the Army during the Gulf War and we would be honored to serve and defend our country again today. I knew that my husband would give him a good explanation.

My husband thought for a few minutes and then told my son to go stand in our front living room window. He told him: "Son, stand there and tell me what you see?"

"I see trees and cars and our neighbors' houses." he replied.
"OK, now I want you to pretend that our house and our yard is the United States of America and you are President Bush."
Our son giggled and said "OK."

"Now son, I want you to look out the window and pretend that every house and yard on this block is a different country." my husband said. "OK Dad, I'm pretending."

"Now I want you to stand there and look out the window and see that man come out of his house with his wife and he has her by the hair and is hitting her. You see her bleeding and crying. He hits her in the face, he throws her on the ground, and then he starts to kick her to death. Their children run out and are afraid to stop him, they are crying, they are watching this but do nothing because they are kids and afraid of their father. You see all of this son.... what do you do?"

"Dad?"
"What do you do son?!"
"I call the police, Dad."

"OK. Pretend that the police are the United Nations and they take your call,listen to what you know and saw but they refuse to help. What do you do then son?!"

"Dad, but the police are supposed to help!" My son starts to whine.
"They don't want to son, because they say that it is not their place or your place to get involved and that you should stay out of it," my husband says.

"But Dad...he killed her!!" my son exclaims.
"I know he did...but the police tell you to stay out of it. Now I want you to look out that window and pretend you see our neighbor who you're pretending is Saddam turn around and do the same thing to his children."

"Daddy...he kills them?"
"Yes son, he does. What do you do?"

"Well, if the police don't want to help, I will go and ask my next door neighbor to help me stop him." our son says.

"Son, our next door neighbor sees what is happening and refuses to get involved as well. He refuses to open the door and help you stop him," my husband says.

"But Dad, I NEED help!!! I can't stop him by myself!!" "WHAT DO YOU DO SON?"
Our son starts to cry. "OK, no one wants to help you, the man across the street saw you ask for help and saw that no one would help you stop him. He stands taller and puffs out his chest. Guess what he does next son?"

"What Daddy?"
"He walks across the street to the old ladies' house and breaks down her door and drags her out, steals all her stuff and sets her house on fire and then...he kills her. He turns around and sees you standing in the window and laughs at you. WHAT DO YOU DO?!!!"

"Daddy..."
"WHAT DO YOU DO?!!!"

Our son is crying and he looks down and he whispers, "I close the blinds,Daddy."

My husband looks at our son with tears in his eyes and asks him... "Why?"

"Because Daddy.....the police are supposed to help...people who needs it....and they won't help....You always say that neighbors are supposed to HELP neighbors, but they won't help either...they won't help me stop him...I'm afraid....I can't do it by myself...Daddy.....I can't look out my window and just watch him do all these terrible things and...and.....do nothing...so....I'm just going to close the blinds....so I can't see what he's doing........and I'm going to pretend that it is not happening."

I start to cry. My husband looks at our nine year old son standing in the window, looking pitiful and ashamed at his answers to my husbands questions and he tells him...."Son"

"Yes, Daddy."

"Open the blinds because that man.... he's at your front door..."WHAT DO YOU DO?!!"
My son looks at his father, anger and defiance in his eyes. He balls up his tiny fists and looks his father square in the eyes, without hesitation he says: "I DEFEND MY FAMILY DAD!! I'M NOT GONNA LET HIM HURT MOMMY OR MY SISTER, DAD!!! I'M GONNA FIGHT HIM, DAD, I'M GONNA FIGHT HIM!!!!!"

I see a tear roll down my husband's cheek and he grabs my son to his chest and hugs him tight, and cries..."It's too late to fight him, he's too strong and he's already at YOUR front door son.....you should have stopped him BEFORE he killed his wife. You have to do what's right, even if you have to do it alone, before...it's too late." my husband whispers.

THAT scenario I just gave you is WHY we are at war with Iraq. When good men stand by and let evil happen is the greatest EVIL of all.

Our President is doing what is right. We, as a free nation, must understand that this war is a war of humanity. WE must remove this evil man from power so that we can continue to live in a free world where we are not afraid to look out our window and see crimes on humanity. So that my nine year old son won't grow up in a world where he feels that if he just "closes" that blinds the atrocities in the world won't affect him. Today the second day of "WAR on IRAQ"

I felt compelled to write this and pass it along. Hopefully, you will understand the lesson my husband tried to teach our son.

"YOU MUST NEVER BE AFRAID TO DO WHAT IS RIGHT!   EVEN IF YOU HAVE TO DO IT ALONE!"

BE PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN!   BE PROUD OF OUR PRESIDENT!

BE PROUD OF OUR TROOPS!! SUPPORT THEM!!!

SUPPORT AMERICA,
SO THAT IN THE FUTURE OUR CHILDREN WILL NEVER HAVE TO CLOSE THEIR BLINDS...."

We Will Fight For The Right To Live In Freedom

HILLARY FACELIFT?

I’m seeing my shrink this afternoon. I was putting it off till the fall; but I know now that I can’t last that long. Angst up to the nostrils. Vivid messages are coming through to the psyche front lobe. Must get to the couch afore I fall off altogether. Ever been there? Well, if you have, you know that breakdown waits for no one; put-off equals little men in white coats at the door.

So off to see Dr. Put It Together.

The reason? Well, you’d never guess it. I know I’ve been in the pastorate for a good long time, more years than many of you readers have been breathing. And that job in itself can surely crack a brain or two. (Don’t tell me it’s not a “job” but a “calling.” I already know that. But at the moment, I can call it a job if I want to. Have checked in with the Higher-ups on terminology and got the thumbs up).

No. It’s not the pastorate — phones ringing night and day, gossipy board members plotting mutiny, ushers late for ushering, war in the music department, Sunday school teachers failing to show up and not phoning ahead of no-shows, complaints from laity who just don’t understand that there really are not 40 hours in a day, and so forth and so forth. But that calls for a Book Magnus; no clock for that at this juncture.

So it’s not the job. It’s not the long winter. It’s not a blood shot eye that stared me in the face this morning when shaving. Nope. Not even a neighbor who complains that I play Sinatra too loud.

It’s Hillary. I really am distressed about Hillary. Can’t take it any more. With the thong and everything, I don’t think that one more weight upon a shoulder can keep from becoming a chip. I’ve tried, but to no avail. Hillary once more has got to my nerve hot bars and they are steaming aplenty.

Now that’s why I’m going to Dr. Put It Together. I don’t know if the steam is from anger or pity. And being a clergyman with ethics and morality at the top of my extremely sensitive persona, I have to sort this out or all soul caves in. Further, being near retirement, I can’t have a cave-in afore rockin’ chair comes a-knockin’. Know what I mean? Psycho-stuff big time here.

Anyhow, Hillary is at it again. I mean Bill’s lied to her more times than eggs don’t turn over shiny in the skillet. Recall when she went on TV to defend hubby, saying that it was the political right that was messing things up in the Oval Office? I saw it. I burnt it into my CD memory. There she was on the visitor’s chair, facing Rosie. Rosie was all compassion, ears and leaning over. “It’s the political right,” Hillary said with strained countenance.

I had a strong hunch that she was "off". After all, she was pointing her accusing figure at me and company. I did not like that one twit. Nevertheless, she had to have her time in the Rosie glow. So she went for it.

But you know what happened after that. The thong. Yep. It was the thong. So much for the political right doing in her husband. It was something else, for sure. And naturally a minister doesn’t want to get gross and all that, so has to leave it to parishioners to fill in the well-media informed blanks on that faux pas.

Anyhow, Hillary surely has had it. Not to mention all those tabloid pix showing Chelsea drunk and sliding off a barstool and in love and out of love and escapading around India with mommy on a mother-daughter get-closer thingy.

God knows how much we parents have to bear when it comes to our kids acting like hellcats. So I felt sorry for Hillary in all that child-upbringing stuff for, let’s face it, when it came down to it, there wasn’t much support at home base — even the White House — when hubby was with The Thong and all that kind of exposure.

Well, now it comes out that Hillary is late. She’s late. And you know that Hillary is Ms. Perfect. She knows everything — from health care for the nation to feminism advancements to pro-choice double-talk to old time Methodist upbringing with Bible at the center of life to hobnobbing with the Hollywoodites to freezing out the enemy with one glare that could frost the sun.

But she’s late. Major late.

If there’s anything that gets to my nerves, it’s watching someone else late. I can be late, and I have a history of being late. But, knowing the pain it can bring to those on time, I double-feel when someone else falls into the same major iniquity. So Hillary being late really makes me quiver.

Her book is to come out in August. Not ready. Not even a manuscript showing at the publishers. Not even a title for pre-marketing stuff. Promises promises promises. But no promises upped to book size yet. And this is almost middle April. Rough draft? None, as far as the big boys in the office can spy. Final copy? Give me a break.

Now we all can speculate as to what Hillary has done with the $2.85 million advanced her by a trusting publisher, Simon and Schuster. Further, as the whole world was told some months ago, the total deal will cough up more than $8 million greenbacks. What we could do with those papers to build a village, eh?

Anyhow, it’s not come to hauling Hillary off to court — not yet. But. . .one never knows in this culture of litigation happy face.

In other words, Hillary has failed. She has failed. Not that this is the first time, but, of course Ms. Hillary protesting that she’s never done anything amiss, we all know that humans being mortals, Ms. H has surely lapsed on an occasion or several. But now — before a respected publisher handing over mega bucks! Well, this is just too much.

"We must be off to the printer next month, but the manuscript isn't in yet!" said one Simon and Schuster source last week. "Advance sales are lagging. And there is no title. Without a title it's been difficult to market."

But what is giving me the shakes more than anything is this: One of Hillary’s associates told media the following secret. Well, it’s not a secret any longer for since I read it you could have read it, too. Anyhow, it’s this: “In all fairness, she has been preoccupied with serving New York during these challenging times.” Okay. I can get that. It doesn’t hang together all that tightly, but I at least can try to tolerate that.

Yet it’s what follows that sends me to the couch. The intimate explains: “The writing is wonderful, touching, and will lift Hillary to a new level of respect.”

Now, I don’t know if you can understand this or not, but here goes: That last statement really makes me wanna pop the whole bottle. Know what I mean?”
