Report: Texts at NYC Islamic schools contain anti-Semitic passages
Jerusalem Post ^ | Apr. 3, 2003 | MICHAEL FREUND

Textbooks used in New York City's Islamic schools contain "passages that are blatantly anti-Semitic" and repeat "old canards" about Jews, the New York Daily News reports.

The paper conducted a three-month long investigation, which included visits to private Islamic schools and a review of half a dozen textbooks used as part of the regular curriculum.

The report notes that a textbook written for children in grades 3 through 6, entitled "What Islam is All About," says that Jews and Christians "lead such decadent and immoral lives that lying, alcohol, nudity, pornography, racism, foul language, premarital sex, homosexuality and everything else are accepted in their society, churches and synagogues."

Elsewhere the book asserts that "Jews subscribe to a belief in racial superiority."

According to the paper, the book has sold over 40,000 copies and is said to be in use in more than half the city's Muslim schools.

Another textbook, "Mercy to Mankind," which is used by 5th and 6th graders, states that the Jews "killed their own prophets" and sought to deceive Muslims by altering the text of the Bible, the newspaper says.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg strongly condemned the use of the textbooks. He is quoted as saying "Personally, I find it disgraceful, any textbook that tries to take away others people's rights or condemn other people because of their beliefs, I think is inappropriate and undemocratic."

Eva Moskowitz, Chairman of the City Council s Education Committee, said she would look into ways of applying "leverage" on the schools to cease teaching anti-Semitic material.

New York City has 15 state-registered private Islamic schools, with approximately 3,000 to 4,000 students enrolled.

That is not only not specifically "anti-semitic", but is even arguably true (I have heard similar sentiments here about mainstream American culture.) (The second comment about Jews believing in racial superiority is a different matter.)

Conservatives cannot have it both ways. We can't call for a reduction in government intrusion in education, support for private schools and home schools, etc. and then turn around and complain about the subject matter in someone else's schools.

People passed me off as a cynic at the time, but I once said that conservative support for private religious education would come to a screeching halt once it became clear that a large number of the people who pursued this kind of schooling are Muslims.

They forgot that we eat babies on Passover and use the blood of babies to make matzoh.

Passover is coming soon; I can't wait for the crispy taste of a Christian baby.

Little buggers are becoming harder to catch these days; they're crafty and scuttle away.

"...but dropping men feet-first into a shredder, shooting at your own people as they try to cross bridges to get food and water, and killing any subordinate who disagrees with you is acceptable to Islam - it gives Muslim leaders the 'moral-high-ground' - mountains above those infidels descrating our sacred land!"

I've always wondered, do some denominations taste better than others?

Currently, the State of New York partially subsidizes textbooks in Catholic, Protestant and Jewish private schools.

If the subsidized textbooks in those schools contained language like this about Muslims, I guarantee the Board of Ed would have intervened a long time ago.

Once again, Muslims are allowed to get away with stuff that no Christian or Jew would dream of.

No that I approve of these books, or of Islamists, but the statement above is actually true.

That's why we should not allow Muslim immigration.

Woops. I meant the part about Jews killing prophets was true, not the part about altering the text Bible.

It's the existence of Muslim schools that has had me worried. I think you've hit the nail on the head. Ultimately, I really think it means that their culture and ours simply cannot rest peaceably together. Islam and Christian heritage, or east and west if you will, are inherently opposed to each other. I don't know what the future holds for us here in America with Muslims as part of our melting pot, or more appropriately, tossed salad.

Then the problem is not the Muslim schools -- it's the State of New York. And the solution is not to have the state crack down on the Islamic schools -- it's to have the state get the hell out of the business of overseeing private schools.

The Muslim schools are a problem, and the state of New York is contributing to the problem.

We cannot tolerate institutions that school a generation to oppose popular sovereignty and constitutional freedoms.

If we allow this cancer to grow we are setting ourselves up for a fall.

Finds it disgraceful?? Will try to apply "leaverage"??

What a collection of capons!!!

These schools should be cut off from any support whatever of a governmental nature. New York City should reverse tis policy of not cooperating with INS with respect to reporting illegal aliens, Islam should be recognized for what it is, a cult similar to, but far more virulent than, "Heaven's Gate", and all radical Muslims should be deported to some Islamic Paradise in the Middle East - like the Sudan.

That's exactly what people in the United States used to say about Catholic schools, too.

That's exactly what people in the United States used to say about Catholic schools, too.

Then, as now, the important thing is not what people say, but what is actually taught in the schools in question.

No inquiry into any Catholic school during the Know-Nothing period could have produced a single textbook condemning all non-Catholic Americans as degenerates leading immoral lives.

Nor could teachers have been found denouncing the US constitution or calling for a holy war against the larger culture.

The Know-Nothing movement failed because the Know-Nothings were liars misrepresenting Catholic education.

I think the madrassah is a different kind of institution than a Catholic school on a substantive level. We have seen what imams teach in our prisons. We have seen what they teach in the Wahabbi mosques. We have seen what their textbooks contain.
