Woman Pulls Gun on Unarmed Assailant
The Macomb Daily ^ | Norb Franz

A would-be robber got a little more than he bargained for after targeting the wrong motorist at a Warren intersection. Acting as if he had a handgun, the man tried to rob a 40-year-old woman. But he wound up on the wrong end of a pistol wielded by his intended victim.

The Warren woman told police she braked for a stop sign on Lorraine Boulevard at Dodge Avenue, when the man opened the driver's door of her 1991 Oldsmobile Cutlass. With his hand in his right pocket, he pressed an object to her jaw that she believed was a gun.

The culprit ordered her to give him money -- but she had other thoughts.

Clutching $6 in one hand, she began struggling with him as he again demanded her money.

Determined not to become a robbery statistic, the woman reached with her other hand to the passenger seat for her 9 mm handgun, grabbed the pistol and pointed it at his face.

"If you're going to shoot me then do it, 'cause I'm definitely going to kill you," the brave resident replied, according to police reports.

The surprised assailant ran without getting a cent. He is described as a black male in his mid 20s, 6 feet tall, 165 pounds, wearing a blue skull cap and baggy blue jeans.

No shots were fired.

Shaken by the incident, the woman waited until Tuesday to report the March 19 holdup attempt. Reports state that she felt by the time she had regained her composure, she thought it was too late to file a complaint. The woman eventually approached two Warren patrolmen investigating a report of a stolen automobile on her block on Packard Avenue.

The Warren woman, whose name is not being published by The Macomb Daily, has a permit to carry a concealed weapon, police said. Attempts by the newspaper to reach her for comment were unsuccessful.

Detectives have not yet determined if the attempted holdup is related to an earlier similar incident. Police said a teen-age boy told a woman at Fast Track gasoline station on Van Dyke that he needed a ride to Lakeside mall in Sterling Heights. When she said no, he brandished a handgun, Detective Sgt. Scott Pavlik said.

The woman drove off, circled the area and called police after spotting the teen. Officers arrested him a short time later.

Heh. Yeah. I lived in Southfield before moving to New England. The Bloomfield/Commerce area was quite nice. I still have many friends who live in that area (Commerce/White Lake/Union Lake).

The 'burbs around Detroit are really nice in some areas, but man, you get into some places and its like "Ouch, where'd all the trailer trash come from?"

(In fairness, I've seen a fair amount of trailer trash here in New England, too..)

True enough, I know that.... but I have had a hard time with the popular models I have had available to me to try, because they are double stacked for capacity.

I tried carrying my 66" recurve bow in ankle holster. Ineffective.

Sorry Red, any gun is better than no gun.

I wont care whether I have to punch one hole or two to stop an assualt. Besides, .357's are better than .45's but who wants to carry one? Good house gun, not comfortable as concealment arm.

Little people need little guns and training, gun handling and mental state, to use them.

Uh, Michigans' neighbor to the southwest, Illinois, is about to have Daleys' gungrabbers pass even more restrictions...we are the Massachusetts of the Midwest.

Getting off the first shot is generally the winning move, That is what gives you time to unzip, light a smoke and consider if he's worth any more ammo.

She may or may not have had training about how to use the gun but she certainly hasn't been told WHEN to use it.

Agreed, but it's way different when happening than it is in the hypothetical.

That's the idea. I just have to get a .38, .357 or 9MM that will fit in the jacket pocket first. Like I said, it will beat a .45 in a holster that I can't get at.

I've been using IDPA matches to experiment with a faster way of concealed draws. I even found that the thickness of the material in the cover garment is important. I had one case where I kept getting hung up in the shirt and I found that I didn't have the shirt starched like I usually do.

I know a guy who works for 7-11 in their offices that has a self designed shoulder holster that he uses under a white dress shirt and tie. The only thing out of the ordinary is he doesn't fasten the center button on the shirt. I have tried to see the imprint of the gun under the shirt and can't see it. Amazing.

"Little people need little guns and training, gun handling and mental state, to use them."

How mental does the state have to be?

I have been committed. Is that enough?

Further, I am not a little person, but I am petty.

R.A. Heinlen is great! Here's my favorite quote:

"A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects."

Karl Marx had many of the same sentiments, actually.

I use two holsters. One is an upside down shoulder holster, the other is a waistband clip where I can reach through the jacket while turning sideways to the attacker to shoot through the jacket. I can re-position the clip holster easily if I want to open the jacket.

No shots fired. Holding a conversation with the scumbag! She may or may not have had training about how to use the gun but she certainly hasn't been told WHEN to use it. Like a rape/attempted rape victim who won't ID the perp, she just sent this scumbag 2 blocks over to rob someone else when she could/should have sent him to hell. Sorry, I'm glad she's safe but no applause from me.

Saving a/your life without pulling the trigger is the ideal outcome, anything beyond that is simply damage control. This thug didn't neccessarily fear the gun, it was the womans resolve to use it that he feared the most. It sounds like deadly force would have been justified, but she would have had to go thru a Grand Jury investigation along with all the other grief related to the act. Do you really think that outcome would have been better?

I started with the Galco IWB Royal Guard and use it all the time in all weather. I just can't get at it when I buttoned up because of freezing weather or rain.

I was attacked during a pouring rainstorm one time so I do know the bad guys don't let weather stop them.
