LOYALTY AND TRUST….THE TRUE MARKS OF A SOLDIER

Chris Seifert, 27, a Captain in the 101st Airborne Division was killed early Sunday morning in Kuwait. The Associated Press reported that fifteen other soldiers were injured, three seriously, by a surprise attack within the compound.

At first, it was suspected that local Iraqi sympathizers were responsible. It turned out to be much worse. One of the 101st’s own, Sgt. Asan Akbar (his adopted Muslim name), was later identified as the probable attacker.

According to AP, an army spokesman was quoted as saying that Akbar had been "having what you might call an attitude problem." The spokesman said that, if found guilty, Sgt. Akbar would be returned to Fort Campbell, Ky., home of the 101st, "for judicial punishment."

There is much divisiveness in our nation today, much like Viet Nam. Large numbers of anti-war protesters clog our streets, giving psychological support to our enemies and weakening our military’s efforts in the field.

We had, and still have, very strong doubts about the administration’s motives and methods in Iraq; nevertheless, now that we are engaged, nothing short of total support for our troops is the only course left for Americans, both in and out of uniform.

We felt the same about the Viet Nam War, which we remember well. This nation cannot repeat the mistake of treating our military people like dirt. And to allow a traitor within the armed forces to go without swift and sure punishment would be inexcusable.

If the man had an "attitude problem", he should have expressed it in some way other than shooting his comrades in the back. Combat is bad enough without having to look constantly over your shoulder.

Sgt. Akbar made a choice when he joined the VOLUNTEER army and took an oath to defend his country. He made another choice (if found guilty) to break that oath. If he had an "attitude problem", he deserves the ultimate "attitude adjuster"…..a firing squad.

Before you begin to rationalize, temporize, or feel sympathy for, Sgt. Asan Akbar, remember Captain Chris Seifert. He got no "judicial review."

I'm a Christian. I don't rejoice in any man's misery, or death.

I think he should be tried so as to establish for certain whether he is responsible for the crimes of which he is accused.

If he is found guilty, I think he should be offered a chaplain who knows Jesus, who can point him to the redemption, and forgiveness, that can be found in Christ alone.

Then he should be hanged by the neck until dead.

I can't see why any of this should take more than a week or two, a month at the outside.
