“Now that’s some funky freepin’!”

Like so many Americans, I have been alternately appalled and angered by the behavior of so-called Peace activists since the War in Iraq started. The Women in Black have gotten good press in Richmond. None of the coverage I saw questioned why a feminist, pro-Palestinian Peace Movement would rally their troops at an intersection facing a Jewish Synagogue and time their marches to coincide with Sabbath services there. There is also an abortion mill at the same intersection. Ironic or Moronic? You decide.
I carried two signs: EVIL TRIUMPHS WHEN GOOD MEN DO NOTHING and GOD BLESS OUR SONS, OUR DAUGHTERS, OUR TROOPS & OUR PRESIDENT, GEORGE W BUSH. After a brief but pleasant discussion with a Richmond Police Officer, I took up position on the corner of Boulevard & Grove next to the Museum of Fine Arts. My Mission was to make eye contact with as many of the women as possible and to go home. I was not prepared for the reaction from motorists. Shortly after I took up position on the corner, people started to wave and honk and do the thumbs up thing! Heheheh. The Women in Black, who were supposed to walk by me, regrouped and marched in the opposite direction. Not to worry, they would be back soon.
They crossed to the other side of the street and as they worked their way back, the people in the Synagogue began to leave. However a number of them stood in groups on the sidewalk and watched as the Women with their large, black, no war on Iraq banners marched toward them. The women turned and OMYGOSH!!! They had to cross four lanes of traffic at the light and walk directly past and behind me to get back to the assembly point in front of the Museum! A man in tight, black pants (or panting in black tights – memory fails) came mincing up the sidewalk to cover my flank, holding in his hand - a cell phone, for crying out loud. Covering HIS flank were three of Richmond’s finest on bikes. The horn honking picked up a tad as people waiting at the intersection for light changes picked up on this Marine Mom’s solo stand.
The Women crossed in an orderly fashion in groups of 25. I was able to look at just about all of them and made eye contact with the ones who would look at me. I counted 150 people identifiable as women and 2 or 3 gender-unknowns. Since the Women walk in silence, I too, kept silent during the confrontation and tried to maintain a calm, determined look on my face, but I probably looked more like a deer caught in the headlights, especially when one of the gender-unknown types got in my face with a camera. She/he probably got off 25 or 30 flashes and if there was any film in that thing, got some great nostril shots. I know how hard it is for a woman to keep her mouth shut and finally one of them hissed behind me, “Why don’t they get their own demonstration!” Then, they regrouped in front of the Museum for meditation and chant, which was briefly interrupted by a group of bikers on Harleys. Heheheh. They looked at the women in black costumes draped around the shrubbery, looked at my signs and revved those engines up a few thousand decibels. USA! USA! USA!
Four different young men parked their cars to come shake hands and thank me. A few of the people from the Synagogue waved and gave a thumbs up. One lady even crossed over and with hands raise in the air saying, “Praise the Lord, Praise the Lord! Thank you God!” I met and thanked a Korean War Vet, explained to a couple of college students the irony of the actions of the Women in Black (they seemed to agree with my assessment), I thanked the police and went home.
Folks, you can do this. I am a middle-aged Mom. I do not argue or debate as there are others better equipped than I for that task. I was going to say: Pick your battles wisely! However, after attending the Rally for America the next day, I decided to Freep the Anti-America Rally in the Fan District which ended in vandalism on Broad St. (Sigh) More Later. God bless America.

I confronted one that had a sophmoric sign calling Bush a "fratboy" or something, and let them know that they are not a valid "anti-war" movement, but an anti-Bush movement.
When I was done, they had all agreed with me that the Bush bashing tainted their "cause".
