Uprising By Shiites in Basra Underway; British Pouring Artillery into City

Just monitored on Sky News: embedded reporter says Shiites in Basra have begun, in his words, a "popular uprising" against the Saddam forces still in the city. British Army units are "pouring" artillery into the city (likely isolated areas) preparing to move in.

KUWAIT, March 25 (Reuters) - British military officials said on Tuesday they had no information on any popular uprising in Iraq's second city of Basra, but added that they would do everything possible to encourage such a revolt.

"We don't know anything about a Basra uprising," said a British military source in Central Command in Qatar.

British television networks have said there are reports of an armed uprising in the city.

A British spokesman in Kuwait said British and U.S. forces wanted the people of Basra to attack soldiers loyal to Iraqi President Saddam Hussein.

No, the new Iraqi government will not "opt out of OPEC." Instead, it will remain a member in good standing. It will be useful to the US to have a client government, solidly on our side, sitting in the inner councils of OPEC.

As of right now, BBC News 24 is reporting: "Reporters with UK Troops near Basra say Iraqis in the city may be turning on Saddam."

Reporter Ben Brown has just now said British commanders have confirmed some sort of civilian uprising in the city. No specific details follow.

Just a brief comment on this, This are of Iraq has suffered very greatly at the hands of Saddam's cabal. They've had no electricity, no food, no water, nothing!!!!

This action I hope will send a message to those who would seek to punish their political opponents that actions do have consequences and need to have consequences. You don't go and treat your constituents like dirt.

This kind of thing is what needs to happen to other dictatoriships like this around the world. Kudos to Rumsfeld for endorsing this action.

There's nothing "constitutional" about it if it involves shoving probes up the @sses of U.S. citizens who have been stripped of their rights to arm themselves, all in the name of protecting them from the Islamic enemies that the INS can't even keep out of the country.
