Sean Astin Prays For Troops

Sean Astin prays for troops. Tehanu @ 6:36 am EST Sean Astin appeared on Joan and Melissa Rivers' miniature red carpet to send a message out to our troops in Iraq, via television. In short, he said that since the beginning of the war he got down on bended knee to pray for them, and that he's still praying for them and for a victory, and that he hopes for their safe return. Also, Joan and Melissa asked him if it was a disappointment to them (the LotR cast and crew) that Peter Jackson wasn't nominated. Sean replied by explaining that they had pretty much prepared themselves for disappointment with these films (implying that they are getting less credit than due). Overall, Sean was very serious and genuine, and kept a solemn air about him.

Hi, HOTD!

My opinion of Sean Astin (Which was high already) is getting higher!

It was done in 1980. Long time ago, before LoTR.

The story is set in the 1980's, but it was only made a year or so ago. Elijah Wood is 21 years old. It would have been kinda hard for him to star in a movie that was made before he was born, doncha think?

Hi Pippin! Hi Alouette! Unfortunately, the Brazos blog is on the blink...server is acting up...and I wrote so much today!!

Yes, Sean apparently is the grown-up of the group! Him and John Rhys Davies...have no idea of Elijah's leanings, but I think that is just as well...I think he is a smart young man...

did not see Ash Wednesday...and I think you are right: he is trying to get as far awy from Frodo as possible. I dont blame him and wish him luck. He is (along with Sean) an extremely talented young actor, and hope he can find parts that are more 'mainstream' that will allow him to show his full range. Tom Hanks was able to do it, but I do not think films where he goes to the lowest common denominator is going to do it for him. Just because it is perverted, doesnt mean it is uplifting...and those are the parts that people remember the best.

Elijah was once asked in an interview were his leanings were politically as well as about the war, he wisely refused to answer on the grounds that it was not his place as an actor to say what he thinks the government should do.

As for his opinions, he keeps them to himself. For someone who is in his early twenties, he's very intelligent and I believe his future is looking good!

I am still p!$&#d Sean Astin did not get nominated for Best supporting for his role as Samwise!

I thought it should have been shared by Andy Serkes and the CGI animation team.

I feel you are right about Elijah Wood.

It was reported on one of the "Rings"/cast crew link web sites (which one I don't know) that he says he is a Christian and is to use the gifts that God has given him for good.

He is young and also in the environment of Hollywood.

Much of his body of work has some good moral messages. Then there are others, like in this last release, "Ash Wednesday", where they are difficult to find. Dif. not a family movie...but does have a great Christian song playing while the credits roll. What the movie is trying to convey, I have no idea.

Elijah says "Lord Of The Rings" changed his life and that he has settled down a good bit. And I would imagine being on a jet leaving NYC for LA on the morning of 9/11, as he was, could really add to it.

Anyway, pray for the guy, I think he is trying.

He pretty much had to spend every day with Astin for 18 months, so maybe that exerted a good influence on him.

Samwise Gamgee has always been my favorite character in this epic film, and this just gives me another reason for feeling this way.

Hey girl!! Long time, no talk to!

To me, Sam is one of the most important characters in the story with his steadfastness and loyalty to Frodo.

Rumors of John Astin's death are greatly exaggerated!

Call and ask him.

Thanks for the ping, MUD. This Sean Astin sounds like he's a good guy, but most of this thread "went under my butt."

Sorry about your "butt problem".

I agree with you about some of the comments on Sean's parents. That was not the focus intended for this thread.

The intent was in reponse to what I had seen posted on the Free Republic site of mostly bad reports concerning the Academy Awards Sunday.

I esp. grieved because the Academy Awards, along with many of the pre-Oscar related shows, had been telecast to our troops.

I had seen nothing posted on Free Republic about Sean Astin going to Joan and Melissa River's pre-Oscar show (televised to our troops) for the purpose of encouraging our Armed Forces. He even displayed the cuff links he was wearing which were shaped like battleships in honor of our Naval Forces on the front line.

I had hoped to bring some encouragement after those awful anti-war protests with the disgraceful treatment of our law enforcement agents who were protecting these so-called stars. "Stars" who have no love for this country or our troops, only a love of themselves.

Sean Astin's voice was lost in the midst of this and it needed to be heard.

I might add that the quotes some posted on this thread from "The Two Towers" were also a source of comfort.

Thanks for the reply. Actually, I was jokin' on Mudboy Slim because he's such a LOTR fan and I know nothing about the classic writings and movies, I am sad to say.

I am glad this thread about Sean Astin was posted. It's refreshing to read about the "good guys" in Hollywood occasionally.

Good to hear from you. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

I have loved Free Republic for many years, but never posted a thread, therefore was a bit "nervous" about it.

I was moved to finally post as a result of seeing the need for some "good reports" from the entertainment industry. I think we were all sick of enduring months of their remarks putting down our President and our country. These people are so callous they do not seem to care how their actions affect our troops on the front line, or any of us who happen to love this county, our President, and those who risk their lives to protect us all. We sure need more Sean Astins.

It is just a sad fact that the voices in the entertainment industry are the ones that most people hear, voices, for the most part, that are not qualified to speak.
