A French friend of mine just e-mailed:

It's 09:02 pm in Paris, 10 minutes ago I was at a friend's house for dinner. During drinks, someone turned the TV on, French news cable net LCI was broadcasting those horrible images of US POWs. Believe it or not, but my friends made jokes about those fine soldiers! So, I grabbed my coat, said goodbye in German, as French collaborateurs should be addressed, and left. I guess it's about time to apply for a US immigrant visa...

John Fund wrote an article for the Wall Street Journal suggesting that we wave visa requirementa for highly qualified French, German and Russian citizens and invite them to take up residence in the US, creating a brain drain in these countries. Does your friend qualify?

That is exactly what I was thinking over the past couple of days. Only I was hoping that we would not come to their rescue the next time. Let the Muslims impose Sharia law on them and pour all that wine into the gutter. That might make them mad enough to actually fight for a change.

When I was young I was in France and I picked grapes in Peugetville(spelling) France. I worked for a man named Pier Camous, he owned a large winery and he was a descent man. During WW2 he was in the French underground, he loved America and everything we stood for. He also dispised the Parisians as he called them. He lost his only son in Vietnam, and told me how France lost more lives then America in Vietnam. He also told me how the French and American Gov worked out the plan to get France out of Vietnam. He may be dead now as we lost contact with eachother. That was back in 1974. I pray for the French that love America, because they are outnumbered by the Parisians.

This Frenchman is living proof that you can't put everyone in the same category. But I for one, am not impressed by this French superciliousness. It's pathetic. Sneering is a substitute for real achievement.

Worse, this baseless self-satisfaction (based on exactly what?) blinds the French to their own weakness. It is a "feel good" substitute for real preparation. In the months leading up to the German blitzkrieg, the French papers were full of stories about the "invincible French army". They are always invincible, up until the moment of defeat.

France was once a great country.
