Foxnews checks all sides.

Posted on 03/23/2003 7:57:29 AM PST by ConservativeMan55

I was watching Foxnews early this morning. They were using a Sky News reporter who was traveling with US Soldiers. This was during the firefight this morning at Umm Kasar.

What started out as a report in the middle of a firefight turned into a running commentary by the Sky News reporter against the war.

Fox kept the pictures the reporter was showing, but turned the volume down and recognized the commentary by the reporter. Bob Sellers said laughingly....

"Yeah...oh ok..what started out as a report has turned into a reporter running commentary and shooting his mouth off"

Then they turned things over to the Military Analyist who agreed that reporters shouldn't be running commentary. Rather they should be reporting what they see.

I saw this level of bias from Sky News during Tommy Franks press conference the other day as well. The reporter stood up and asked Tommy Franks.

"If you really want the Iraqi people on your side, why are you bombing Baghdad so hard and scaring them with this Blitzkrieg??"

Bob Sellers used to be on the Weekend mornings but they moved him to a more serious role doing Foxnews Live. Now that the war has started he does the mornings again sometimes.

Right after Sellers moved to nights they hired this guy named Julian Phillips who is very liberal. The whole weekend morning crew got so liberal I couldn't stand it.

I don't like Mike Jerrick either.

He's the physical mirror image of Charles Grodin.

As reporters go, Greg Kelly and Rick Leventhal are doing the best job so far, because they obviously have respect for the guys they're riding along with.

I agree, the Brit reporters should not have been assignerd to US units. Kelly is doing a grat job IMHO.

Cavalry Ho!

Let's toss Paula "and just a little bit sexy" Zaun in at this point....yesterday, she continually referred to the 'Seventh CALVARY'.

I heard the Sky News reporter call him a "Muslim-American".

Muslim-American does not go to his nationality is this case, but to his motive.

The embedded reporter was making it a much more significant event (ie saying that this city/port was supposed to have been under control and now because of this it wasn't).
He wasn't talking about it as an isolated pocket that just needed to be taken out.

Paula who? Oh yeah...the bubble head who was canned from FNC and went over to the Communist News Network.

My prayers go out to all allied troops, of all branches, but I give an extra mention for my fellow scouts and tankers of the 7th Cav, the 1st Squadron of which I used to belong to. The Garry Owen Regiment will do us proud, you can bet.

Scouts Out! Cavalry Ho! Garry Owen!

"I heard the Sky News reporter call him a "Muslim-American". Whats next? Gay-Americans as a nationality? Stupid-Americans? When will it end?"
Well, if I'm gonna be tagged with a hyphenated name, I'll choose "Bad-A$$ American" thank you!

They have just been talking about it on FOX. I believe someone also started a thread on it.

Dont hold one idiot against the entire program. We're getting some truly amazing coverage from all this, and on average the reporters are doing a good job. As officials state-side get a chance to review tapes expect this reporter to have his access seriously reduced, maybe it already has been the COs are getting a lot of leeway in how they handle their reporters.

Put that way, I agree. He was making himself and his broadcast the center of the message too, I noticed.

Fox also needs to learn something about military unit hierarchy and rank structure. The last straw for me came a few minutes ago when I hear Eric Shawn refer to the maintenance detatchment that is missing as a "maintenance division".

That's not all they need to learn. Yesterday, Tony Snow said that the A-10 Warthogs on his video screen were taking off from the USS Constellation.

Thelack of basic military knowledge evident on Fox--and the other networks--is endemic throughout the media, and there's a simple reason for it. This war is being covered by a lot of reporters who have absolutely no military expertise or experience. Before 9/11, press interest in military matters and national security was at an all-time low; fewer than 50 reporters were assigned to the Pentagon full-time. That number has increased since then, but there are lots of reporters in the field who don't know a BMP from an LAV. This morning, I heard one anchor on CNN identify a Sea Stallion helo as a twin-rotor Chinook.

And don't forget: many of these anchors (paging Paula Zahn) rely on their producers to feed them information through their earpiece during live coverage. Predictably, most of these producers don't have a clue, either, and it shows.

Don't get me wrong: reporters can learn military principles, tactics, and terminology with a little experience. But the battlefield is no place to start. I'm still waiting for one of the news guys/gals to get tagged by nerve gas that seeps through their skin. For some reason, most believe that the mask is all they need to protect them. Once again, a clear lack of experience and an apparent refusal to follow the training they received before being embedded.

In fairness, some of the reporters are doing a good job. Greg Kelley of Fox has been great reporting on the 3rd ID, and Scott Pelley of CBS has been solid with the Marines around Umm Qasur, and Ollie North has been great with Marine aviation. The rest range from mediocre to terrible, to include the crew from Sky News. Murdoch needs to have a little house-cleaning over there, after the war ends.

Amen, brother. You nailed it on the head...these reporters have never served, never thought about serving, and never gave the military any consideration until the enemy was at the proverbial gate. I just wish Ollie North, Col. David Hunt, and some of the other retired officers would start correcting the little pampered princesses and princes instead of letting them get away with it. I have finally gotten so sick of Fox I switched the channel to the NCAA tourney. My 'Cats are playing tonight, anyway. Be good, FRiend.

The irony of the matter was that the battle that the Sky reporter was wetting his pants over was a mopping-up skirmish in which NOT ONE marine was killed, and in which a number of Iraqis were either killed or captured. He was making it sound like another Iwo Jima.
