Kerry harks back to ideals of the '60s
The Boston Globe ^ | 3/23/2003 | Glen Johnson

The long and shaggy hair of his college days has turned gray. And it's now cut, respectably, at the collar.

The military uniforms he wore in Vietnam, and while testifying before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in protest of that war, have been replaced with business suits and Hermes ties.

In many respects, Kerry is a product of the decade he now seeks to evoke.

Kerry calls for investing $10,000 per year for early childhood education, rather than $70,000 per year to keep an adult locked up in prison.

Lets save money, close the prisons. Does this make him pro-death penalty now?

He challenges industry to push renewable energy sources rather than drill for oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska.

Perhaps he might want to consult Sen. Kennedy about his opposition to Wind farms off of Cape Cod!

He urges development of a prescription drug program for senior citizens and health care coverage for families, rather than maintain a system that often treats those people at far greater expense in hospital emergency rooms.

Brilliant, lets all become Socialists!

Wow, a refreshing NEW approach to politics!

''They think that we've lost our willingness to dare bravely and to dream greatly, to make hard decisions and undertake bold endeavors,'' Kerry said. ''They wonder whether the Democrats can do what Robert Kennedy did, which is to combine thoughtfulness with toughness, caring with courage. They worry that no one asks Americans to put country first, and that we no longer require people to reach for what is best in men.''

Where's the "Bringing Back Camelot BARF Alert!!!"? Senator Kerry can certainly "dare bravely and to dream greatly" after marrying into a $500 million net worth, but his disjointed and awkward liberalism doesn't play the way it did back in those chaotic 1960's. Anyone who pines for those days must really be troubled: the Soviets were surging, American foreign policy was in retreat or confused as LBJ was using polling to dictate his Vietnam "policy", and the Great Society was just getting cranked up (talk about Deficits As Far As The Eye Can See).

Instead of Robert Kennedy, Sen. Kerry looks more like George McGovern: appease, hate-America, bury head in the sand. A good strategy for any Demo aspiring for the Presidency in 2004.

In campaign speeches from coast to coast, Kerry challenges fellow baby boomers to rekindle the passion that fueled Robert F. Kennedy's presidential campaign in 1968, and that produced the civil rights movement, the environmental movement, and the campaign to end that war.

Democrats have no new ideas worth a cent so they're forced to relive their heyday.

Sounds like the last gasps of a dying party!

Kerry hasn't got a chance. His brand of northeastern liberalism is alive and well... in the Northeast. When he gets to the South and Midwest he'll be sent packing.

What ideals? If it feels good, do it? Tune in, turn on, drop out? If you can't be with the one you love, love the one you're with? Yeah, those were great ideals from a generation of peaceniks and socialists. I can make that claim, because I was a high school senior in '65.

Kerry is attaching himself to the Camelot legend. His appearance, mannerisms, and speech cadence suggest that he trying to morph himself into Bobby Kennedy. It is a way to appeal to the leftist base of the party, but it will not serve him well in the general election should he be nominated. In fact the policies and ideals of JFK and Bobby would probably be considered right of center today.
