WASHINGTON - Former Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan, D-N.Y., is in critical condition at a Washington area hospital, suffering from an infection after his appendix burst, his assistant said Monday.
Moynihan, who turned 76 on Sunday, is in the intensive care unit of the Washington Hospital Center, said Vicki Bear Dodson. His appendix ruptured last Monday.
"He was doing well until late Thursday, early Friday, when an infection set in," said Dodson. "Unfortunately, there's been no change in his condition over the weekend."
Moynihan has suffered a series of health setbacks in recent months. He was hospitalized in January for an intestinal disorder and again soon after for a back injury.
Now a senior scholar at the Woodrow Wilson Center, Moynihan was first elected to the Senate in 1976 and finished his fourth term in 2000. Fellow legislators named Manhattan's new federal courthouse in his honor.

May I add that Daniel Patrick Moynihan, as Nixon's Ambassador to the UN, told the UN to its collective face that the genuinely freedom-loving nations of the UN could caucus in a telephone booth? Nothing wrong with that analysis then or now.
May he enjoy a speedy and full recovery! Our prayers also are with him.

Moynihan was a gun grabber.
Those who do not believe that Republican control of Congress for the past four years has produced any benefits should go to the THOMAS website and look at S. 156. This bill is Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihans latest version of one of his favorite gun-control schemes. The bad news is that he wants an outright ban on all 9mm, .32 caliber, and .25 caliber ammunition. In advocating a ban, he has moved from his previous position of advocating a 1000% tax on these bullets. The difference between these two positions is meaningless.
Senator Moynihan has been in the Senate for a long time and has finally broken free of the credibility that he had almost built. Long ago, he started to build credibility by recognizing that welfare would ruin our society by destroying the role of parents in poor families. In more recent years, he justified his vote for the partial birth abortion (PBA) ban by stating that PBA was too close to infanticide. In 1998, Moynihan admitted on This Week with Sam and Cokie that if Bill Clinton obstructed justice and lied under oath, he should be removed from office. However, when he reached the moment of truth, he showed his lack of integrity by voting against the articles of impeachment.
Moynihan has always been an enemy of the American citizens right to self-defense. He was a zealous proponent of the Brady Bill, the Crime Bill, and the push to keep everyday Americans from having Winchester Black Talon bullets. The election of Bill Clinton in 1992 opened new opportunities for him to attack our Second Amendment rights, and one of his favorite schemes is to keep us from having access to ammunition. Source. Don't forget former Senator "Scoop" Jackson, who effectively led the charge to defeat Senator John Kerry's initiative to kill former President Reagan's SDI.
...Yes, truly principled Democrats are few and far between. I too will pray for Mr. Moynihan's speedy recovery.

Wow...never heard of an appendix attack at his advanced age. It's bad enough when you're younger. Yikes.

Funny you should mention drinking problems...
I met Senator M once in the lobby of a well know hotel in London in the mid eighties. He was hammered (smashed)!! I think he said he was waiting for a cab. I pointed out the cabs are outside, senator. Oh yes he replied and stumbled forward.
I thought " And he is one of our Senators!"

I wonder if Moynihan would have enjoyed better health if he had not been forced not to run for re-election.
By the way, I wonder why everyone's appendix isn't removed prophylactically at an age when such surgery is not a serious matter. (I speak as someone who still has his appendix.)

I hope he's okay! Get well, Mr. Moynihan!!

Are you guys saying he's a DINO?No, he was a Democrat in more than name. But he isn't a Schumer Democrat, or a Hillary Democrat, he was very reasonable.

Yep, he's one of the few Democrats I don't have a white hot hate for.
Cheers.
Unfortunately/Fortunately, news is filled for today, so HillBilly can't use this for their benefit.

Add to that list David Boron, former senator from Oklahoma.

even though it sometimes required him to walk a very narrow path to maintain some dignity in the face of democrat party pressures.Yes, like his strong stand for high standards and the rule of law during Clinton's impeachment. Right?

Agreed. He's now the president of Oklahoma University and a fine man.
To: areafiftyone
He is a Democrat that one can reasonably disagree with and have a reasoned debate with. He was not one of the new breed "agree or be hated" type Democrats. Thats a big difference even if you disagreed with him on the issues.

Glad to see the appreciation for Senator Moynihan on this thread. I know that he loves this country and was of the old Democrats, the patriotic ones, before they went down the sewer. That was when criticism of the President stopped at the water's edge, when there was a possibility of the "loyal" opposition.
Prayers for a wonderful Irishman on St. Patricks Day.
