It feels so good to say that I am finally leaving southern Kalifornaistan. Good-bye Gray Davis, Good-bye LA, Good-bye Highway 5 and 405 at 5 in the afternoon!

I’m taking a job with a company that’s flight department is based out of Salt Lake City and the wife and I began looking for a place about a month ago, slowly working our way around the area. One weekend we just decided to drive up to Jackson Hole WY and instantly fell in love. The drive was wonderful up I-15 to Ogden and the total trip was around 290 miles, that’s if I ever need to drive it.

We immediately found a nice lady at Jackson Hole Reality to help us locate our dream home and well, the rest will be history shortly.

Being in corporate aviation one of the perks that comes with a FT job in a Fortune 50 company is usually travel passes. My future company has travel passes with Delta and Skywest into and out of SLC, so I can commute to and from work directly out of JAC into SLC, then make my way to our corporate hanger on the same field.

The only downside (if you want to call it that) is that I’m leaving the flight deck of the world’s greatest bizjet IMHO, the Gulfstream V for it’s direct competitor the Bombardier Global Express, which this company has a pair of. On the up side it’s more pay, cheaper cost of living and better benefits not to mention the view out our newly purchased backdoor is kick a$$!!!

"Which states have no personal income tax?" Seven states have no state income tax: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Texas, Washington and Wyoming. Two others, New Hampshire and Tennessee, tax only dividend and interest income.

I lived in Jackson about 3 years ago and REAlly wish I had stayed!!! It is the most beautiful place and so close to Yellowstone, we used to have a yearly pass and would go just for the day. Truly a magical place. Now I'm back in California, based on a bad decision. Still trying to get out, wish me luck.

Maybe your employer will send your paychecks to Wyoming. You actually "perform your services" in the air over many states. Check with your accountant --- your mileage may vary. The tax savings could be subtantial.

Some of my ancestors were among the earliest pioneers in the Hole. I have photos of their ranch with the Teton mountains in the background.

Here's a question from a poor relation still wondering about a huge inheritance that will never come: Why did they sell out and leave before the property/ rents went so high? ( thanks to invading rich californios and eastern politicians). Answer: My ancestors moved on to enjoy the effects of real poverty in Utah. Such is my luck!

congrats to you and yours on the escape. i left s.cal in 93 moved back to oregon where i was born and raised. only problem is this a very liberal state with high property taxes. and state taxes. the upside we are becoming more conservative each year that passes. and the country side around here is bueatiful. have fun in your new home!

I think you responded to the wrong FReeper. I'm not a pilot. As far as minimizing ones tax burden, I'm not sure how pilots are treated, however, I do know that states like to get their hands on money any way possible, which is why pro atheletes have to pay state income taxes based on how many games they play in each state.

Yes, your right. I'm thinking if he can perhaps be considered an independent contractor from Wyoming, working for a SLC based firm, but performing virtually all his service over other states, he may be able to avoid most oor all state income tax. Worth a few bucks for an hour of CPA time (one who has a national perspective) to find out.

I know a pilot who flies from Denver. I should ask him about it. Being considered an independent contractor means you have to pay your own social security taxes etc. It's not something you can just elect.
