***Northeast Snowstorm*** February 16-17 2003 (Official Thread)
self | self

Posted on 02/16/2003 8:19:33 AM PST by SamAdams76

Moderators, please pull if a similar thread has been started. I did a search on "snow" and blizzard" and came up with nothing.

What originally looked to be primarily a mid-Atlantic snowstorm has blossomed overnight into a monster snowstorm that threatens to shut down the major cities of the Northeast for tomorrow.

Just got the latest forecasts. Washington D.C. area will see 1-2 feet. Philly will see 17-34 inches according to their local mets. NYC will see 1-2 feet. And Southern New England (including Boston), which was originally thought to be missing this storm, is now pegged to get at least 10-20 inches before all is said and done with possible blizzard conditions tomorrow night as the storm explodes ("bombogenisis") off Nantucket island during the day.

Some very impressive snowfall reports already coming in despite the fact that the storm hasn't even developed off the coast yet. Some 8 inches is on the ground in the DC area and snow is falling heavily in the Philly area and parts of New Jersey. This snow is NOT from the storm that is expected to develop off the Carolinas this afternoon, move northeast and "explode" off Nantucket Island during tomorrow.

These storms are never a sure thing until they happen because they are so unpredictable. But this storm has all the ingredients to make it a storm of historic proportions from Washington D.C. to Portland, Maine. If everything falls together just right, we could be looking at 2 feet (or more) of snow in many urban areas of the Northeast over the next 36 hours.

Please post your local reports here.

I got the snow drift covering the front of my house pretty much dug out. Had to go through a side window to get outside. Having done that...I realized I was running seriesly low on nicotine. This presented a hugh problem.

Luckily I have a pair of these.

I glided along the snow drifts for what amounted to be a 3 mile round trip. When I reached the crucial intersection I was presented with a situation that I hope only comes along once in a lifetime.

If I made a right I could see my 7/11 with lights shining brightly...as is the American Way.

If I went left I could see the dimly lit liquor store through the driving snow.

I hope someday....you will all forgive me.

Pulleys! What a great idea!
About three weeks ago, we had 6 redwinged blackbirds. Aparently they thought it was spring! lol Haven't seen them since, so I guess they headed back to warmer weather.
The bread tossing didn't work :( It's all buried.
Still no signs of life here...no plows, no people, no husband! lol

These are the times that city Mayors can be fully evaluated. Snow removal is a core service that needs to be done fast, and completely. Bad plowing and parking policies can absolutely choke a city for weeks after a big snow.

As well as Governor's in small state's such as Delaware. I'll be lucky now if I see a city plow by Wednesday, and that is not the fault of the Mayor of Dover - the city is first required to clear the quote state roads unquote roads that go through them before they can even touch the regular streets.

Someone else said they saw robins. None down here in Easton, but Mr. Flicker says, even in a white-out, suet with mealworms really keeps the body temperature up!

I'll take a few "Currier & Ives" photos and email 'em to you.

I visited the supermarket yesterday just to observe. Shoppers were in full panic mode, just like pre-hurricane lemmings in Florida. Tell me - just HOW MUCH bottled water does a family of four NEED for a day or two? (Unless they plan to bathe in the stuff...) And just HOW MUCH milk does the same family need (unless they plan to... nevermind)

I got some Godiva Dark Belgian Chocolate ice cream (don't worry, it's made in Teaneck or some other place in NJ), and a bag of chips to go with the Daytona 275.

Today, we're just looking out of the warm side of the windows. No work, no school today OR tomorrow.

If anyone has to be out there, please be careful!

(Short note here: Yes, it's me. I'm posting under my wife's screen name. I've been a lurker for well over two years, and forgot my wife was signed up. For employment purposes, I don't DARE post under my real name... Trust me.)

Some people just like to show off - for any reason!!!

I agree with the radio station - anyone who doesn't need to go anywhere should just stay put.

I agree with you.

Part of the reason is because of the 24/7 cable news - the networks feel they've got to get into and it just turns into a competion between them, thus forgetting their true purpose of instant news - real information for real people in real time.

The only reason I've been whining about it is because I'm stuck with a cantankerous 4yo and doing all the shovelling myself. Beyond that, I've got everything I need, although I am running low on beer..........

I just came in from doing my mid-day shoveling. It seemed as if it were yet another seven or eight inches. I hope I don't have nightmares about shoveling snow. Be safe everyone.

Well....I know I wan't planning on going anywhere myself...but the liquor store e mailed me and left a voice mail, stating they were open. (I'm a preferred customer).

What did it for me, was when they paid a kid ten bucks to trek up to my house with a bullhorn.

Freezing.
Vernon Township, NJ (Where I used to live years ago...) stated that everyone must stay off the roads, NOW. EVERY vehicle that can use tire chains, without shredding teh tranny, and can carry a plow MUST. Oh, and their roadcrews must man all vehicles.

I was just informed that as of 1:04 our time (EST) Orange County NY at least entered an official state of emergency.
And they're saying the same thing that New Jersey said...

Woodbury Commons closed??? They NEVER close. If Godzilla and the Mongol hordes were bearing down on the place, they wouldn't close.. Why decide to do the smart thing now???

How are you doing with the day off from WP?

Haven't seen the snowplows yet...and it's so quiet you can hear a churchmouse.....strange, very strange...

Same here. When I was out shovelling earlier the near absolute silence was really eerie.

BTW - I admire the retraint of your group in the face of the enemy.

I wouldn't throw an egg at a Yankees fan; I like eggs too much. LOL! All kidding aside, New England might not have the winningest teams these days but you won't find better sports fans or hardier Republicans.

With clotheslines on the left side of the house, the right side and the back, it looks like we're running a primitive laundry. But beware. If you put a birdfeeder on a clothesline, chances are you won't want to hang clothes on it anymore. Neighbors on either side have done the same thing and now everytime a bird sees a clothesline they think food.

Post #905 shows a suet feeder on the same reel line as a feeder. Note the highly technical apparatus.

LOL!!!

I'm waiting for a friend of mine to appear on Messenger so I can tell him how dangerously low I am on needed supplies. Trekking to the corner liquor store with the little one in tow, when I haven't even reached the side walk with the shovel yet, is not an appealing proposition.
