***Northeast Snowstorm*** February 16-17 2003 (Official Thread)
self | self

Posted on 02/16/2003 8:19:33 AM PST by SamAdams76

Moderators, please pull if a similar thread has been started. I did a search on "snow" and blizzard" and came up with nothing.

What originally looked to be primarily a mid-Atlantic snowstorm has blossomed overnight into a monster snowstorm that threatens to shut down the major cities of the Northeast for tomorrow.

Just got the latest forecasts. Washington D.C. area will see 1-2 feet. Philly will see 17-34 inches according to their local mets. NYC will see 1-2 feet. And Southern New England (including Boston), which was originally thought to be missing this storm, is now pegged to get at least 10-20 inches before all is said and done with possible blizzard conditions tomorrow night as the storm explodes ("bombogenisis") off Nantucket island during the day.

Some very impressive snowfall reports already coming in despite the fact that the storm hasn't even developed off the coast yet. Some 8 inches is on the ground in the DC area and snow is falling heavily in the Philly area and parts of New Jersey. This snow is NOT from the storm that is expected to develop off the Carolinas this afternoon, move northeast and "explode" off Nantucket Island during tomorrow.

These storms are never a sure thing until they happen because they are so unpredictable. But this storm has all the ingredients to make it a storm of historic proportions from Washington D.C. to Portland, Maine. If everything falls together just right, we could be looking at 2 feet (or more) of snow in many urban areas of the Northeast over the next 36 hours.

Please post your local reports here.

Check out Post #221. That was last week. It slumped a bit, but I haven't seen the lawn for four months! And we're expecting 12" to 20" more today. As long as we keep our power.

Were there no cops around to stop the eggers? Morons. But at least you learned that lefties can't throw.

I love my guns too much to drink but I will spread your message: Shoot or a shot but not both. How about a flame thrower applied to the driveway, is that okay?

Buses were not supposed to pull over to the curb. When we got to 63rd Street, we found out why. The snowplows just don't care. They plow in whatever is at the curb. NBC filming the bus in front of us blocking Broadway, trying to get out from the mountain left by the plow. Other buses hopelessly stranded too. Do you think I'd better leave here soon and head uptown before I end up walking?

I saw it too, what really struck me was how many people they seemed to need to get the car going. They must have had 15 or so pushing it before it got moving. And I love that they went out to help people get unstuck. And there were a lot of them. One shot of 7th Ave showed only 3 cars on it, and none of them moving. All three were stuck, including one sideways cab with wheels spinning.

Local ABC radio earlier reported from different highway locations around the city, one reporter said the highways are sort of plowed but not at all safe and anyone who is out is stupid as for example, there are up to 6 foot drifts on the entrance ramps to the Garden State Parkway as well as surprise drifts on the roadway itself.

11:45AM and I am leaving the office to go home. The light snow turned heavy at 10AM and it is snowing thick and heavy out there with 2 inches on the ground right now. My next post here will be when I am home!

The media, as usual, is way way overplaying this event. They're creating the most intense blizzard and snow dump ever.

I kinda know what 20-30" of real snow coverage looks like .... and it ain't D.C. or NYC or Philly. 2 feet is a cover of snow, knee high to 6' man - everywhere. That's 10 foot drifts in spots. There's no traffic or trapsing around town through that kind of snowfall.

State of Emergency? Why? It'll all be melted down by this time next week in Carolina, Virginia and Maryland. Is there money involved in that designation?

There's nothing that the 24/7 cable outlets can't escalte into a crisis. Stay home, make a snowman, drink a 12 pack and "write your name" on the snow pile the plow just left in front of the driveway you just shoveled. This isn't a perilous moment akin to a tornado or earthquake. Mount Ranier isn't erupting and putting Tacoma off the map.

They're marketing this as the most prolific storm in the history of the Northeast. Tell that to the people of Buffalo, they dealt with 50 REAL inches a year or two ago, they were buried for days. This is contrived - and it's what they're going to do with every single event or threat we face over the next years. Great.

All the deaths they've been noting occured in the Midwest. Days past. Probably not even the same storm. It's snow. School's Cancelled!

Are you still there? Sounds like things are pretty bad there, maybe you should head back before you get stranded.

Have you seen a plow yet? lol
I don't expect to see one for days.....it's really bad out. I have yet to see a car or people outside yet either.
It's really coming down right now. The snowflakes are getting bigger! Long Island is doomed! lol

How are things in your areas? Our snow didn't start until about 3 this morning. From what I heard on the radio, just about everything in CT is closed, even the shopping malls. Bradley Int'l Airport has only one runway open.
