***Northeast Snowstorm*** February 16-17 2003 (Official Thread)

Moderators, please pull if a similar thread has been started. I did a search on "snow" and blizzard" and came up with nothing.

What originally looked to be primarily a mid-Atlantic snowstorm has blossomed overnight into a monster snowstorm that threatens to shut down the major cities of the Northeast for tomorrow.

Just got the latest forecasts. Washington D.C. area will see 1-2 feet. Philly will see 17-34 inches according to their local mets. NYC will see 1-2 feet. And Southern New England (including Boston), which was originally thought to be missing this storm, is now pegged to get at least 10-20 inches before all is said and done with possible blizzard conditions tomorrow night as the storm explodes ("bombogenisis") off Nantucket island during the day.

Some very impressive snowfall reports already coming in despite the fact that the storm hasn't even developed off the coast yet. Some 8 inches is on the ground in the DC area and snow is falling heavily in the Philly area and parts of New Jersey. This snow is NOT from the storm that is expected to develop off the Carolinas this afternoon, move northeast and "explode" off Nantucket Island during tomorrow.

These storms are never a sure thing until they happen because they are so unpredictable. But this storm has all the ingredients to make it a storm of historic proportions from Washington D.C. to Portland, Maine. If everything falls together just right, we could be looking at 2 feet (or more) of snow in many urban areas of the Northeast over the next 36 hours.

That is good to know. My office is in East Vincent. Right over Black Horse Hill on Route 100. We won't even be attempting to go in.

My office (for my "day" job) is in East Norriton, outside of Norristown. I'm not expecting to even try go in tomorrow. But with my cable modem, VPN, and PC Anywhere, I can connect to my PC at the office and it's just like being there (except no phone calls to bother me).

I also run my own part-time business (software) out of my house and there are no days off from that, since the company consists of just me.

I love how the local news keeps telling me how lucky we are that Monday is a holiday. For whom? About the only people I know that have off on Monday work for the government.

My gut feel is that this turns to a rain for a little while on Monday and we don't get as much as they say. Just a gut feel.

I remember the 96 storm here in Manassas VA. Also remember another bad one in 80's can't remember the exact year. Have 8 ins here right now we'er expecting up to 2 ft. I work for Comcast they have people in Hotels so at least the call center will have someone there.

That's all I worry about, in 1996 we had a huge blizzard and we lost power,heat...had a newborn baby & another little one- my poor husband managed to dig out our little car from 4 ft of drifted snow or more and we "putt-putt'd" out of there to my mom's where there was heat!!!

It was quite the adventure!

I also remember the really bad storm in '78 and '83 I think- abandoned my car and walked 3miles home in that one!

In Leesburg, VA [Arthur - 'slap er down agin Pa' - Godfrey field] at noon there was 13" plus the 5 " we had Friday-Saturday. Snowing like crazy and not supposed to stop untill noon on Monday. I wonder if that was before the monster started to form in the Carolinas. My prediction: 25-30 inches. Perhaps a record.

I am really surprised at the difference a few miles makes -- here in Bucks Co. (North of Philly) we're still just getting light, but steady, snow (about 12:40 PM) -- the driveway and street are almost covered, but the blacktop still shows thru' the snow -- maybe half an inch accumulation, if that

My husband and I took a Power Squadron course in Weather Forecasting, years ago. Just before Easter, they said that all conditions were perfect for playing golf on Easter Sunday. We woke up to 6 inches of snow! HeeHee! The instructor had a hard time explaining what happened!.

What I did learn was that forecasting weather is NOT an exact science. Actually following the course of a storm -- after the fact -- is quite interesting.

I've put down my psychrometer a long time ago, but there was a time that I faithfully kept track of the weather on a daily basis. That was before computer models.

Fascinating hobby!
