***Northeast Snowstorm*** February 16-17 2003 (Official Thread)
self | self

Moderators, please pull if a similar thread has been started. I did a search on "snow" and blizzard" and came up with nothing.

What originally looked to be primarily a mid-Atlantic snowstorm has blossomed overnight into a monster snowstorm that threatens to shut down the major cities of the Northeast for tomorrow.

Just got the latest forecasts. Washington D.C. area will see 1-2 feet. Philly will see 17-34 inches according to their local mets. NYC will see 1-2 feet. And Southern New England (including Boston), which was originally thought to be missing this storm, is now pegged to get at least 10-20 inches before all is said and done with possible blizzard conditions tomorrow night as the storm explodes ("bombogenisis") off Nantucket island during the day.

Some very impressive snowfall reports already coming in despite the fact that the storm hasn't even developed off the coast yet. Some 8 inches is on the ground in the DC area and snow is falling heavily in the Philly area and parts of New Jersey. This snow is NOT from the storm that is expected to develop off the Carolinas this afternoon, move northeast and "explode" off Nantucket Island during tomorrow.

These storms are never a sure thing until they happen because they are so unpredictable. But this storm has all the ingredients to make it a storm of historic proportions from Washington D.C. to Portland, Maine. If everything falls together just right, we could be looking at 2 feet (or more) of snow in many urban areas of the Northeast over the next 36 hours.

Please post your local reports here.

The Metro, D.C.'s subway is running only the underground parts of the lines. They paid big bucks a few years ago to heat the third rail on the above-ground tracks, but this snow has overwhelmed the system. Dulles is reporting they've allowed eight planes to land this morning and Reagan National is closed unti 4:00. Tractor-trailer accidents on I-81 near Winchester caused people to spend the night in their cars. I hope they had their blankets and picnic hamper. And the best news: Ridge is preparing to lift Orange Alert and set us back to Yellow.

The package stores were doing a booming business for a Monday mornning so it's good news for someone.

The package stores probably would do a booming business around here today because they are all closed on Sundays and no one could get to MD yesterday. The only problem is that no one, including owners, can get to them this morning.

It's fun watching the cabbies newly arrived from Chad work out the snow driving thing.

On Fox & Friends this morning when they were doing one of their outdoor segments a radio car got stuck in the snow - watching all those TV people trying to push it out and interview the cop at the same time was hilarious!!!

I saw that! One of the two hosts yelled "everybody set down your open bottles" when that group of teens leaped into the fray.

These are the times that city Mayors can be fully evaluated. Snow removal is a core service that needs to be done fast, and completely. Bad plowing and parking policies can absolutely choke a city for weeks after a big snow.

Watching this thread from Massachusetts, while forecasters are screeching that we're going to get the same stuff, and reading you guys already under the gun, all I could think of was:

There is nothing more assuming than a cat, and a cat safely and warmly INSIDE, on a window sill -- (probably with a full tummy) ---epotomizes it. All your kitty has to do is start washing itself to really sum it up!

"I got a four foot drift against my front door."

Why oh why does the snow want to drift up at the doors??!! No matter which door I opened up, there was a drift!

What a difference a day makes; glad you beat that snow. It's moving into eastern Mass. now where we already have too much snow and too many libs.

Throw a shovel of snow at a lib today!

Doggy potty is one of the most challenging things right now. Take care of your pets that have to go outside. After all, they keep you warm at night.

Arguing last night with my husband about going to work was stupid, I realized as soon as I looked out the window at 645 this morning. :) It's been coming down all day, we have well over a foot and huge drifts with no sign of stopping anytime soon. My husband is outside trying to shovel in driving snow. He's taking more pictures than anything else. Our neighbors are outside also, they have a Great Dane and a very large Golden Retriever and the snow is up to their shoulders. We are expecting 20-30" total. Plows actually went through once about an hour ago, but we already can't tell. Enjoy your snow day!
