***Northeast Snowstorm*** February 16-17 2003 (Official Thread)
self | self

Moderators, please pull if a similar thread has been started. I did a search on "snow" and blizzard" and came up with nothing.

What originally looked to be primarily a mid-Atlantic snowstorm has blossomed overnight into a monster snowstorm that threatens to shut down the major cities of the Northeast for tomorrow.

Just got the latest forecasts. Washington D.C. area will see 1-2 feet. Philly will see 17-34 inches according to their local mets. NYC will see 1-2 feet. And Southern New England (including Boston), which was originally thought to be missing this storm, is now pegged to get at least 10-20 inches before all is said and done with possible blizzard conditions tomorrow night as the storm explodes ("bombogenisis") off Nantucket island during the day.

Some very impressive snowfall reports already coming in despite the fact that the storm hasn't even developed off the coast yet. Some 8 inches is on the ground in the DC area and snow is falling heavily in the Philly area and parts of New Jersey. This snow is NOT from the storm that is expected to develop off the Carolinas this afternoon, move northeast and "explode" off Nantucket Island during tomorrow.

These storms are never a sure thing until they happen because they are so unpredictable. But this storm has all the ingredients to make it a storm of historic proportions from Washington D.C. to Portland, Maine. If everything falls together just right, we could be looking at 2 feet (or more) of snow in many urban areas of the Northeast over the next 36 hours.

Please post your local reports here.

Not just as a student did I feel that joy! Later on, as a teacher, I was happy to hear we were closed. What was even better was when we'd be at school and the snow would begin around 11 or 12 and they'd release us early!

One time years back when I was teaching near Detroit, I woke up to hear the radio announcer say, "although we are only predicting 2-3 inches of snow, Dearborn Schools are closed today." Well, it turned out we got 13 inches of snow. Dearborn was apparently the only district that subscribed to some particular weather service that was much more accurate than the one used by the media!

We are planning to move to Accomac, from Delaware - the first realtor we had suggested that we start packing non-essential items - so for the past 2 years we've been making periodic trips with boxes down there.

Rarely do either my husband or I drink anything other than beer or wine - so we packed the rest of the bar up when we brought the bar itself down there.

As long as they are safe - and warm and dry - probably a Motel He!! would be ok.

Seriously - I'm glad they're safe and settled.

Actually the entire conversation started because he and his wife are the only ones I know who have an alternate source of heat if we lose power and he was telling me that he would be out the door in a minute if I lose power to come get Jax and me tomorrow.

He's a long time beer drinking buddy of mine - and former boyfriend - in fact he was the first guy I dated when I first moved to Delaware 20 years ago. But our conversation naturallyturned to beer supplies - once we had the logistics of me and heat squared away.

We've got the same Blizzard warning for here. Which according to DelDot means they will suspend all plowing operations once the winds start to kick up.
