Saying no to war

DON'T BE FOOLED by Colin Powell. With testimony before the UN Security Council last week, the secretary of state brought many formerly ambivalent politicians and pundits into the war party. But that is a measure of how callow the entire American debate over war against Iraq has been. The question is not whether Saddam Hussein is up to no good. Powell's indictment confirmed the Iraqi's malfeasance, although with no surprises and no demonstration of immediate threat. The question, rather, is what to do about Saddam's malevolence.

Containment is an alternative to war. And an aggressive application of the principles of international law is an alternative to war.

This, unfortunately, has been the policy for some time; and it clearly hasn't worked. The author is deluded and must have been asleep in a cave for the last decade and certainly must not be aware that a lot of things changed on September 11.

Surrender is the most general alternative to war.

That's what these leftist pussies really want.

Next month the court will be official. Its purpose is exactly to deal with offenses like those of which Saddam stands accused.

I thought that was what the U.N./Security Council was supposed to do, take care of renegades and rogue nations threatening the peace and stability of the world community. What good does replacing/supplementing one impotent body with another do?

Ongoing and ever more robust inspections, like those proposed by France and Germany, are an alternative to war.

Right, ongoing and robust until Saddam kicks them out, like he did in '98. Then we're back to where we are here and what then? This numbskull will be calling for "ongoing and robust" inspection. Why bother? Enough time has been wasted, lets just take care of business and be done with it, once and for all.

Carroll first says Powell can't be trusted, then says everything Powell says is common knowledge. Disconnect, eh?

Don't be fooled by Donald Rumsfeld, either. The secretary of defense said in Munich on Saturday, ''The risks of war need to be balanced against the risks of doing nothing while Iraq pursues weapons of mass destruction.''

I love the Munich symbolism. The Rumsfeld approach versus the Neville Chamberlain approach (ears down, tail between legs, belly-crawling.)

James Carroll, and people like him, are the reason Ted Kennedy will be around until his liver does the right thing and exlodes.

Carrolls whole carp is pretty much moot now that Saddam pretty much told the Frog and the Bosche that he didn't give a F' what color helmet the troops were wearing, they would have to fight their way in anyway.

Bwahaha!

The guy thinks Saddam will just surrender and ask for an attorney and a change of venue.

And a bail reduction hearing.

"Saying no to war" is a wonderful idea. What an idealist column. Now, let's get unfuzzy here and read what our enemies are up to and how we are responding to them...

Intelligence from both the FBI and CIA indicates that al Qaeda is preparing to conduct a major attack that will cause mass casualties, like the September 11 attacks, according to officials. The CIA is worried that the new attack will be al Qaeda's first attempt to carry out a terror strike using deadly chemical, biological or radiological weapons, said officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity.") He said he noticed the word "Jihad" upon opening the box at home. "At first, we just thought it was in really bad taste or maybe some radical in the art department of this company or something," Poillucci said. Reports have Muganiyeh first meeting with Bin Laden as early as 1995 and those meetings have continued. More than this, since al-Qaida fled Afghanistan at the end of last year, the Sunday Telegraph reports, between 80 and 100 al- Qaida fighters were provided with false passports by Hezbollah before being relocated to southern Lebanon, Saudi Arabia and Yemen. The same report acknowledges that Hezbollah, working hand in hand with al-Qaida, has set up cells in the Far East - including Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines and Singapore. It is well known that Hezbollah has operated in Gaza and the West Bank for years, but the recent revelation by the Shin Bet in Israel that al- Qaida has now also joined them there, is chilling evidence of a level of cooperation previously unsuspected. Um...is James Carroll living on the same planet earth that I am? In his happy little world, ruthless dictators will abide by world court decisions, and, if asked really nicely, by saying please, with sugar on top, will happily disarm. Then, they'll all sit together in front of a campfire and sing Kumbaya.

Interesting to note that he is only going back to the 60's with the history lesson. I suppose Germany in the 30's has been wiped out of the history books?

I like what Rush said once. A person's perspective of history only goes as far back as he/she can remember. Anything before that is nothing.

They've practically succeeded in wiping the U. S. on 9/11/01 out of the history books.

Time has blinded Carroll to JFK's brinkmanship and ignores Kennedy's promise to "pay any price" while trying to hook W to LBJ with a mention of 1965.

Blather.

Powell's prosecutorial summary of the case against Saddam should have been prelude not to further warmongering but to a legal indictment of the Iraqi leader for crimes against humanity.

Yeah and who's going to serve the arrest warrant? The UN? ROTFLMAO. What a Maroon!
