as unlikely as the possibility seems, MSNBC just reported again that an arm and hand have been found in st. augustine, [Texas] ...As has the real NBC News.

I just don't believe it. No way could any human tissue survice re-entry. Its probably a hoax from the "finders" and typical media rush-to-report.

Reported on DRUDGE REPORT.....
Final radio transmission between Columbia and Mission Control:
Mission Control: 'Columbia, Houston we see your tire pressure messages and we did not copy your last.'
Columbia: 'Roger, uh, ...' (transmission breaks off after the crew member starts to stay a word begining with the sound 'buh.')
My comments......
The tires are uninflated while in orbit and are inflated during the re-entry phase... It looks like they just did that... Could the LAST word fragment be ..."Blow out "?
If a tire blew it could have damaged / blew off the landing gear door. This would have caused an aerodynamic effect of yawing the shuttle to either side, which would be all that is necessary to cause an areodynamic break up,.. Or the loss of a door would allow 5-10,000 Degree heat to enter the wheel well and cause what NASA has described a 'BLOWTORCH EFFECT" causing structural failure of the wing.
GOD rest their Souls.....

Is there any kind of word about an apartment fire in Plano that may be related to falling debris? Sorry I'm so slow getting back to you. I looked on the Dallas Morning News and there's nothing. I haven't heard anything on Channel 8 this morning either.
I heard it at my house this morning. My friend in Farmers Branch did too. My Dad lives in Quitman, about 72 miles east of Dallas. It was so loud at his house he went outside to make sure nothing hit his house. Amazing, and what a terrible disaster for the families of the crew...

I did visit DU and there was a thread directing readers to a FR thread. It was real-time reporting as FReepers along the flight path were going outside to watch the shuttle fly above, initially unaware of the unfolding tragedy. Almost all of the responses to that thread were gracious; they thought it was pretty amazing to read. Where is that thread? (The FR one.)

Yeah, even they aren't biting on that one. Gotta be a Freeper.Actually, my assumption (And therefore your response) that it's a "Freeper" is very premature. And not fair to Freepers. I have absolutely no doubt that many Republicans who are not Freepers have seen and/or abused these idiots on DUhhh.

It isn't worth bankrupting society to provide test pilots interesting craft to fly.
There's no support for NASA in society because it's irrelevant. Cyberspace matters. With the exception of earth satellites, physical space doesn't.
To: Robe
Still so early. SO much that could have gone wrong. Still all speculation.

"At 200,000 feet the sound of the boom would have taken over 3 minutes to reach those who heard on the ground.
When they heard it and looked up it was more than 3 minutes AFTER the explosion."
Would that indicate that the explosion actually happened BEFORE the video footage we've been seeing? Indicating that it happened during the hi-temp re-entry?

Should probably be viewed and bookmarked. And one of the many things that makes Free Republic so cool. Like having someone witnessing and posting about Kennedy's assination, or something.
(Jim and Admin Moderator...I am pinging you because I just realized how important the url I have listed may be)...

seems entirely unlikely to me as well,
but i suppose there's always a chance that such an 'object' could have ended up
behind/shielded by a piece of debris that deflected the atmospherics long enough ...

There's something truly, uniquely American about this photo. It ought to win a Pulitzer.

Sheppard Smith was listing the names of the seven astronauts on-board Columbia and making a brief mention of their NASA-related achievements. When he came to Kalpana Chawla, he mentioned that on her last shuttle flight (in 1997, I believe) she did something that caused a satelite to tumble briefly out of orbit.

Why transport people? For entertainment purposes, for example--or, on a more futuristic note, to create settlements on space stations.

I just HATE it when the opposition shows more class than our side does.
Then perhaps you should go join them..

I read that at the moment of breakup, (16 minutes out from landing) the computer rolls the shuttle 57 degress for the first S turn, where the underbelly takes the main impact of the atmosphere hitting the Shuttle.

Does anyone have a link to a still shot of the video shown on FOX today, in which it appears the shuttle is coming down sideways before it starts to break up?
To: Robe
My guess is that the increase in preassure was the increase in heat on the tires (expanding the air in them) from some kind of failure in the heat shield. IMHO.
