I find that somewhat hard to belive. Then again I guess if the entire cabin collapsed it would be possible for some low flamability material to survive.

Thank you - The image is chilling.

No they didn't. MSNBC's space reporter said that NASA was aware of the tile damage yesterday. Didn't see a problem with it.
ABC is saying that there is a Soyuz pod that is attatched to the ISS to use as a life boat if the three crewmembers need to get home.

Okay - stupid media bias aside: look at the maps -- Palestine
would have been in the flight path -- and at least everybody's heard of that speck on the map.
Debris falling in Cherokee cty, and Nacogdoches -- again, in the same path.
That Plano ap[artment fire report: forget it - can't be related. Shuttle path way south of Dallas area

You're welcome Katya. Update on Wayne La Pierre... it was his WIFE's college roommate Loren. Still very sad.

Sorry Snopercod, can't help with details. I wasn't working this flight (not to station), but Columbia was the orbiter that was planned for our use next November as the first Columbia to fly to ISS. What a way to wake up, with a phone call from a friend telling me to turn on the TV immediately.
From what I have heard so far, my guess is that a landing gear door opened long before it was supposed to (tire pressure gauge heating up being last data reported.) With all of the security on this flight hard to believe that a sabatuer could have gotten that close to do this, but given the World circumstances and an Israeli astronaut on board one has to assume that the Islamofascists would do something like this if they could.
It's going to be a bad Monday. :(
It's going to be a real bad monday in Baghdad (or Mecca), if they trace this to the Islamofascists.

The Prez is on his way back to WH from Cam DAvid,,that is why the delay. The report on NBC said President Bush was traveling back via car. Why not fly? What's the weather like in the DC area?
To: Arkinsaw
President Bush's plans to assist in Africa with the AIDS crisis is pretty much the direct result of Christian advisors combined with long term national interest. Oh yeah?
Let's see where the money actually goes.
My gut feeling is it will line the pockets of various NGO's "condom distribution" and "education" programs, the rest going to corrupt African regimes.

The worst part is you have the illiterate news people who dont know a thing about space travel making assumptions and spreading "could woulda" scenarios and since they have nothing better or new to say they keep saying the same things over and over again. It's no wonder why when things happen we can't get our facts straight.

Purely speculation mind you, but I'm wondering about the extent of damage due to the insulation coming off the center tank and striking the orbiter.
To: maxwell
Hey, Max. It was so strange. I was sitting here FReepin' away on my computer and I heard a noise. I turned my head sideways and thought to myself, 'what was that?' I didn't think much about it until I heard about this disaster and that it happened over the D/FW area. I was on MSN with my buddy John who lives in Farmers Branch (North Dallas) and he said he heard a noise too. What a horrible disaster, huh?

>Earlier thread said that the Deorbit went perfectly (NASA statement, 819AM)
Re: 1009
Right, the deorbit burn itself went as planned. That suggests that whatever occurred didn't manifest itself until Columbia began to enter the upper atmosphere. More info at this link:

You overestimate how many Israelis strictly observe the sabbath. Even many who do have things like timers on TV's because watching TV is OK, but turning it on is work.

My neighbor tells me that debris is being found at Shiloh and Park in Plano. About 3 miles from my house.
