Just about time for President Bush' State of the Union Address. No doubt, Iraq and the econonmy will share center stage.

If I may, I'll make a prediction.

Unless this economy turns around, the Republican's will loose both the White House and the Senate in 2004.

It does not matter a bit whether a war with Iraq happens, or if it does, how quickly or how long it takes the US to win it.

The only thing that might affect this is to suffer another devastating terrorist attack within 8 months of the next general election. This is too horrible to even contemplate, so the prediction stands.

Either this economy does a turn-around, or Mr. Bush is a one term president...worse, we get a Dem in the Whitehouse.

"Nobody gets in to see the wizard; not no way, not nohow."

Frankly, if the American voting public (since they seem to be the only American citizens caring enough to actually get out and exercise their sovereign duty) are so shallow as to put the despotic democrat party back into control over the economy (when our very survival depends on winning a war the dems don't even want to wage!), let the godless democrats take back the governmental controls for the disengaged citizens will deserve what they get. May God have mercy on US and my granddaughter, but that is the reality of a Republic ... the citizens are the sovereigns and if the sovereigns don't participate in their government, the governement takes on its own empowerment as paramount, just the way the democrat party is attempting to do.

It would not surprise me if your prediction came true. Americans in general are a selfish lot, demanding of instant gratification.

If Bush is perceived as sacrificing the economy the least little bit in order to conduct the war against Iraq (necessary in my view), there are many who will be whining because they didn't get to take a nice vacation this year, and they will hold him accountable.

By the way, the President cannot control the economy for the most part, but he is a convenient person to blame when it's not going well.

Polls show the public doesn't blame Bush for the economy. Before he was even elected he warned the people it was comming. Actually, it will be on the upswing in early 2004 without the tax relief. Tax relief would speed it up a little. I think the voters aren't swayed that easily.

While I personally would vote for Bush over any democrat candidate, I fear that a significant number of voters cast their ballots with their billfold rather than their beliefs. That is perhaps the largest factor of the Clinton re-election of 1996.

We shouldn't over-estimate the impact of the economy on the voting public, but we certainly can't dismiss it either.

No, no, I think the poster really did mean "loose" -- you know, in other words, in 2004 we're going to cut the White House loose from its tethers and fly it as a giant Republican airship over North Korea... ;-)

LS: Dead on, the war and the economy are intertwined right now (after a bit of denial from the markets).

And yeah, exactly how is this breaking news? And hey, dude who posted this, uhm, are you by any chance taking BETS on this? Please tell me yes. :-)

The majority of Americans lean conservative to begin with.

This is a fact that is FAR too often overlooked by both sides of the aisle. Kudos for bringing it up.

If the American public cast their votes with their billfolds, then I hope they realize that their economy CANNOT AFFORD another major attack. The economy was slipping into a recession BEFORE Bush came in, then came 9/11 and the entire focus of the Country HAD to change. If you are not secure, you will surely not have a robust economy either. The two are joined and one depends on the other!! The fact the Democraps were in power for two terms ENSURED that the country became vulnerable. Mr. Bush was not only faced with an already ailing economy, he was faced with an ailing Military and a major terrorist attack. I think he's done a fabulous balancing act. I would HATE to see how an Algore would have handled this. He was have given away the ENTIRE store by now. You are only suffering the damage done by the Democrats that just left

You know that and I know that, but try getting that through to the people who can't see any further than their own nose when it comes to national and international affairs. Like I said before, the vote-with-the-billfold mentality is what got us 8 years of Clinton.

Never underestimate the raw power of materialism and self-interest...even if it means sacrificing one's future. Sadly, the "gimme brats" outnumber the people who actually think (like those who frequent these forums).
