I was under the impression that the produced water had very low levels of salt and was considered fresh water for all practical purposes. This story makes it sound like it's sea water, and I know that isn't the case.

You're exactly correct. In some circumstances the coal bed water is fresher than the above acquifers, but that doesn't make for good
scare tactics.
For all those who want to know the MILLIONS of dollars wasted to satisfy ENVIRO/NAZIS, check out what constitutes an EIS and the sh!t we in the industry have to put up with.

But green groups criticized the change and said the Bureau of Land Management was doing "a minimal amount" to comply with federal laws to protect the environment while catering to big energy companies. Yadda, Yadda, Yadda!

I would like to see actual data on the degree of salinity.
If it truly was fresh, it would be better to release it rather than store it where evaporation would guarantee an unacceptable build-up of salt concentration.

Here in SE NM we would love to have water of that quality!
BTW, depending on whether EPA or the state has Clean Water Act jurisdiction in Wyoming, putting this under the CWA (and thereby requiring a federal NPDES permit) could effectively end production. There is a general EPA NPDES permit for oil and gas produced water in effect for the states which has a "no discharge" requirement to "waters of the US". I don't know whether the permit could be modified for discharge of coalbed methane water. However, in Region 6 in NM most of the water is reinjected or evaporated, both because of poorer water quality and because the program is under EPA in Dallas which doesn't have the staff to process the permits!

I would say they are catering to energy users, which most likely includes the anthrophobic greens.

I would say they are catering to energy users, which most likely includes the anthrophobic greens. That's the point. They are tired of the libs whining about federal assistance to pay high heating bills.

Here in SE NM we would love to have water of that quality! Many producers would love to have the PRB water problem.
It's been awhile since I've played in the Powder, but the discharge permits were definitely a hindrance. As I recall, the issuance was faster in the areas aroung Gillette where the water was purest. I have no doubts that the enviro groups will ramp up the scare tactics to continue their efforts to slow or stop the drilling.
Love your tagline...Permian or Delaware?
