POLL: DEMS FAVOR HILLARY CLINTON IN '04

WASHINGTON (Dec. 22) - John Kerry and Joseph Lieberman have the most support among Democrats when asked about the field of likely 2004 candidates for the Democratic presidential nomination, a poll suggests.

But Hillary Rodham Clinton would lead if she were to enter the field.

Among the current field of likely candidates, Democrats put Sens. Kerry of Massachusetts and Lieberman of Connecticut at 16 percent followed by Rep. Dick Gephardt of Missouri at 10 percent, with others in single digits. Twenty-four percent said they were unsure.

In an expanded field that included Clinton, the New York senator was the choice of 30 percent of registered Democrats in a Time/CNN poll released Saturday. Clinton aides have said consistently that she does not plan to run in 2004.

Trailing Clinton with 13 percent each were Kerry and Lieberman with others in single digits.

Previous polls of Democrats had put Al Gore, the 2000 Democratic nominee, at the top among potential 2004 candidates. When Clinton was included in those early polls, she was not far behind. Gore announced last weekend he would not run in 2004.

Such early polls are largely a measure of the public's familiarity with potential candidates.

Among the field of likely candidates, Kerry has formed an exploratory committee, Vermont Gov. Howard Dean says he is running and others say they will announce their intentions soon.

In hypothetical matchups against President Bush, Lieberman trailed 54-40 and Kerry was behind 55-40, according to registered voters surveyed.

The telephone survey of 1,006 adults, 18 and older, was conducted Tuesday and Wednesday, and had an error margin of plus or minus 3 percentage points, larger for subgroups.

Just eating my dinner and trying to catch up here...this last minute shopping is not how I usually do things...

Anyway, I loved your graphics, Meek. Ain't it something how, in order to push Hill to the front of the pack, they've removed Al from the running? And you see, that if the polls (yeah, right) suggest that this country is backing a Hill candidacy, and it is played up (made up) that the public is imploring her to run, then all Hill has to do to get out of her "promise" to serve 6 years is tell her adoring fans that she HAD every intention of running, but will now just have to sacrifice her calling to serve NY in order to serve even MORE people...

I want to know when her book is going to come out. After all, she's had her advance payment now for about 2½ years...

Actually, I can easily see the Dems "persuading" the witch to run in '04, especially if it appears that no candidate has much of a chance against GWB. If the witch wins, why, that's fine in the sense that the dems would have the WH back. But if she loses, that's almost as good, as it would bury her presidential aspirations and sever the 'clinton connection' once and for all . I strongly suspect the witch is hated by many in her party, and they wouldn't mind turning her into Walter Mondale II. Is it likely that the folks within her party have not been the recipient of her highhandedness, bad manners, and backstabbing? Payback's a hillary. And she's arrogant and megalomaniacal enough *not* to fall for it, if the party assures her that she's got a real chance to win, that the public really adores her, wants her to run their lives, etc.

I believe if she runs against GWB, she'd lose, as she's loathed by many in the south, midwest, and the west minus the pacific coast. But I suspect she'd lose by a much lower margin than we'd find comfortable. Too many Blue Zoners will vote for anyone the party of handouts and preferences puts forward. And too many women will think that she's a "positive role model" for their daughters. But I do think her negatives are too high outside CA, NY, HI, maybe 2-3 other states to make her a viable candidate.

Pray GWB's numbers remain high, and that the economy improves.

AOL's sentence shows its bias: it reads (blue underlined) "POLL SHOWS HILLARY WOULD WIN (next line black print, far less noticeable) party nomination if she enters" A bit shocking at first glance, probably gives the true believers heart palpitations - but it's like a newspaper ad that reads "FREE GIFT (little tiny print follows) with purchase".

Any primary run would be limited and designed to give her a speaking role at the Democrat convention in order to give her a shot at some latter date. Upon further investigation ( reading the entire box on AOL), it says that "Polls show Hillary could win Democratic Party Nomination".
