Ed Gordon goes one-on-one with Trent Lott, tonight at 8 p.m. (ET). Then, a panel of African-American journalists react to the interview at 8:30 p.m. (ET)
Incoming Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott's recent statement that the country would have benefited from a presidential victory in 1948 by then-segregationist Strom Thurmond is part of a pattern of racially divisive politics.
Lott made virtually the same statement 22 years ago, has supported racist organizations, and suffers from other allegations of racial insensitivities throughout his past.
Recent allegations of voter intimidation by Republicans along with the choice of Lott as their incoming Majority Leader make it clear that Republicans continue to embrace the racially divisive politics of the past.
Nope/wrong-o. This piece of tripe will be on opposite MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL. Which do you think th' brothers will be watching?
Michael
The 'black vote' empowered the hijacked ,left, progressive, democrats. The black democrats think the Clintonian Demokratic party gives a rats @ss about them. This, I call a mess and is the only 'mess' I think Lott could have been referring to.
I think Lott should just blatently fess up and say he is 100% against segregation but the train of thought he was having making his prior statement was POLITICALLY predjudiced against the black progressive leftist communistic caucus in which the Clinton's have made of the VERY HARD LEFT, democratic party.
If he makes these statements the democrats have to shut up and then the leftist communists in the media and politics and Hollywood can scream how right winger he is. THEN he is only guilty of being an extremist right winger not 'a racist'. And then with class he can then say that he will 'consult with his fellow republicans, and see if any voting considerations are at hand for the ML role- And make clear he will remain in the senate.
Then the dems will be back in the spotlight (where they belong) as they have NO ISSUES but to bash and call names) and deal with the judicial nominees and other pertinent issues they can no longer try to stop.
There's a former member/recruiter for the KKK in line for the presidency? A man who used the enwurd in reference to a block of people several times on tv last year?
Why aren't people asking for him to step down?!! Oh, that's right, the Rats wouldn't have had control of the Senate (or would have needed to orchestrate another backroom deal to turn another Republican's party affiliation).
Do you remember the Seinfeld episode where George wants to prove that he has black friends, so he grabs the exterminator and takes him out to a fancy restaurant to impress some black higher-ups at his job??
Maybe Lott should have decided instead to go on MNF instead! I bet he can still squeeze into his cheerleader outfit!
His first one was a "F you if what I said upset you" written from his vacation in Florida. He phoned in the next two, which were both "some of my best friends are Negroes." It took the b*tchslapping by Bush to get him on the air (smiling in a disingenuous way) stating that segregation is evil, and it looked like it pained him greatly to say it. Too late for Lott.
If I understand correctly, it took two slappings.
The second came publicly in Philly after Lott defied Bush and wouldn't disavow segregation on Larry King Live.
I heard that too. Doesn't that just say something about Lott? After his President, the leader of his party, ASKS HIM to formally and publicly disavow segregation, he chooses NOT to??? Where are HIS loyalties??
