Incoming Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott's recent statement that the country would have benefited from a presidential victory in 1948 by then-segregationist Strom Thurmond is part of a pattern of racially divisive politics.
Lott made virtually the same statement 22 years ago, has supported racist organizations, and suffers from other allegations of racial insensitivities throughout his past.
Recent allegations of voter intimidation by Republicans along with the choice of Lott as their incoming Majority Leader make it clear that Republicans continue to embrace the racially divisive politics of the past.
