Your idea is good in theory. Unfortunately, it wouldn't work. It is truly too late for Lott to say anything more. There is nothing he can say. The only mea culpa that has a chance of really being accepted is someone's first one.

His first one was a "F you if what I said upset you" written from his vacation in Florida. He phoned in the next two, which were both "some of my best friends are Negroes." It took the b*tchslapping by Bush to get him on the air (smiling in a disingenuous way) stating that segregation is evil, and it looked like it pained him greatly to say it. Too late for Lott.

If I understand correctly, it took two slappings.

The second came publicly in Philly after Lott defied Bush and wouldn't disavow segregation on Larry King Live.
