Ex-Cowboy Newton gets 5 years for drug possession

12/10/2002

From Staff and Wire Reports

ST. MARTINVILLE, La. - Former Dallas Cowboys offensive lineman Nate Newton, already serving a federal drug sentence in Texas, was sentenced to five years in prison Monday for possession of 213 pounds of marijuana in Louisiana.

Judge Don Hernandez initially tried to suspend all but 30 months of Mr. Newton's sentence but changed his mind after prosecutors said the mandatory minimum sentence was five years. Prosecutors had argued for a sentence of 15 to 20 years.

Judge Hernandez told Mr. Newton that he could still be a positive role model for children and for his fans.

"I will be. I promise you that," Mr. Newton said.

Mr. Newton also received a $50,000 fine.

He is serving a 30-month federal sentence on a drug-trafficking charge and could finish it in 19 months. Mr. Newton pleaded guilty in April to the charge in federal court in Dallas as part of a plea agreement.

Mr. Newton, 40, was free on bail from the Louisiana arrest when authorities stopped him in Ellis County on Dec. 12. They found $10,000 in his red pickup and 175 pounds of marijuana in the trunk of an accompanying car driven by a Garland man.

He will serve his Louisiana sentence concurrently with the federal sentence.

Mr. Newton's Louisiana arrest came in November 2001, after he and two women were pulled over for a traffic violation on Interstate 10 in St. Martin Parish. Mr. Newton and the others were accused of hauling the marijuana with plans to sell it.

Mr. Newton is a six-time Pro Bowl offensive lineman. He spent 14 seasons in the NFL, 13 of those with Dallas. He retired in 2000 after a season with Carolina.

Unfortunately Tyson is not the smartest guy in the world.

Well, that's one way to put it. "Even too stupid to be a Kennedy" would be another.

I think he was taken advantage of by Don King

No doubt about that. That doesn't excuse Tyson, though.

and all those mercurial nasty women...like Robin Givens.

The old,"Da bitch, she done set up up,man!" defense?

and another thing about drinking alcohol is that you can tell right away if someones been drinking....by the sight, the smell.....YOu know what you're up against..

now with drugs.....sometimes you can tell but not always....it has more of an internal effect....

that's why it is so dangerous.....

you might avoid getting in a car with a guy that smells of whiskey, but how do you know if the driver just swallowed a bunch of drugs....you don't know until its too late...

I would be in favor of decriminalizing marijuana once a quick on the spot full-proof test is developed to determine drug use.....

there are probably tons of accidents blamed on alcohol when in reality the guy is looped on drugs...

but the statistics don't show that because we just don't test for drugs like we do for alcohol...

in fact, I would guess that a lot of "minor" accidents and moving violations happen with the driver quietly stoned...yet, because he doesn't smell like alcohol, he is never tested....

Which reminds me of an old though still appropriate joke:

Two Dallas Cowboys are in a car. Who's driving?

The police.

Just about anywhere.

The NFL could use a few more Nate Newtons.

The Raiders have plenty of them...when they're out on parole.

"WAS" is the key word there. Twenty years ago, I was a member of the US Army 75th RGR RGT, 3rd BN. But now,...you might say I'm just a "lone" ranger. Because alone, I watch the slow creep of un-constitutional governmental tyranny that is swallowing up what is left of this country that I love so much. It's not even the same nation that I served loyally those twenty years ago. ...Enough said.

Don't get in a car with someone you don't know well enough to trust. Duh.

there are probably tons of accidents blamed on alcohol when in reality the guy is looped on drugs...

Proof by imagination. Wow.
