WASHINGTON - President Bush's twin daughters, who have had brushes with the law for underage drinking, turn 21 on Monday, marking their birthday in Texas and looking to stay clear of the spotlight.
Both Barbara Bush, who attends Yale University, and Jenna, a student at the University of Texas at Austin, were in their home state in advance of a Thanksgiving family celebration. The president and first lady planned to celebrate the twins' birthdays over the holiday weekend, the White House said.
Laura Bush was returning to Texas on Monday and heading to the family ranch in Crawford on Tuesday. The president is to follow on Wednesday.
The White House is fiercely protective of the twins' privacy, and officials refused to provide details about the birthday plans.
Barbara and Jenna Bush have drawn unwelcome headlines over the last few years for alcohol-related episodes.
In May 2001, police in Austin cited both of them for violating state alcoholic beverage laws.
Police accused Barbara Bush of being a minor in possession of alcohol and Jenna Bush of misrepresenting her age in trying to use a fake ID to buy alcohol.
Jenna Bush was accused of ordering a margarita and was asked to produce identification proving she was 21. She showed a valid driver's license belonging to someone else, police said. She was not served.
The charges were dismissed after the twins, 19 at the time, performed community service, attended alcohol awareness classes and paid $100 in fines.
The month before that incident, Jenna Bush had pleaded no contest to charges of underage drinking. She was ordered to take counseling and perform community service. A judge fined her $500 and suspended her license.
Last summer, Jenna Bush reportedly tried to persuade a bartender to sell her a drink, but the bartender asked her to leave after consulting with the Secret Service agents who protect her.

Exactly. Look at the title of the A/P article: "Bush twins turning 21 today (President's daughters are marking the occasion in Texas)". Then read the short article text and it's almost ALL about their underage drinking indiscretions. (Two documented cases, I believe). This is almost anything BUT a Twins birthday article.
As you said, Cincinatus, the media bent over backwards to tap dance around Chelsea's underage BINGE drinking episodes, yet Jenna and Barbara sneak a couple of drinks and they're all over it. And the episodes they cite are HISTORY, not current news. And it's not just a "mention" in the story, it's THE STORY in the article! Blatant media bias and hypocrisy, imho..... G-r-r-r-r !! < /soapbox rant >
It must be a sad day for the media "elite", one less thing for them to harp on. I almost remember the day my age caught up with my I.D.
Now, why is it the media don't refer to Robert Byrd as "Robert Byrd, former KKK Clansman", hmmm?????.....
He got a good price for them and got a little drunk.
He woke up the next morning beside a girl who looked just like Chelsea.
He tried to get up to leave, but she was lying on top of his arm and he was afraid that he might wake her.
So he chewed his arm off at the shoulder.
He had to chew off his other arm too, just to make sure nothing like that ever happened to him again.

Well, let's see...
The Bush Twins were busted for underage drinking more than once...Thus, the FACT that they're turing 21 (Legal drinking age) would OF COURSE come up in the story of their birthday.
Chelsea, even though she's gotten publically hammered a few times over the past year or two, WAS OF LEGAL DRINKING AGE!
I dislike (hate) the Clintons, and like (love) the Bush's as much as anyone, but the crying wolf about media bias around here is embarrassing.
