One potential flaw in your analysis is the implicit assumption that those who vote Libertarian would vote Republican if no Libertarian candidate was running. I am not so sure that is true.

Some would probably vote Republican, but some would probably also vote RAT (remember, Libertarians espouse free pot, free booze, free sex, etc. -- you could make a convincing case that Clinton was a closet Libertarian).

But more to the point, I suspect many of them would not vote at all. Having a Libertarian candidate to vote for gives them a way to vent their frustration with the system, which is probably good. Without that pressure release valve, I think many would simply have nothing to do with the whole process.

Nothing could be further from the truth. Libs want victimless crimes decriminalized, which is far from "free" as in government-subsidized, no-cost that you imply. Clinton greatly expanded the role and power of the federal government in essentially everything he touched, which makes him a statist, the exact opposite of a libertarian, even though he hypocritically enjoys many of the vices his jackbooted thugs arrest other people for doing, that libertarians incidentally would like to see decriminalized.

Libertarians espouse absolutely no entitlements. You want things, you earn money and buy them. The only ones I see advocating free drugs around here are Republicans. You may have heard of free prescription drugs for seniors?

-- you could make a convincing case that Clinton was a closet Libertarian).

This might be most absurd lie ever posted on FR. Libertarians as a whole despise the Clintons.

Maybe this jem will help your understanding:

"...when we got organized as a country and we wrote a fairly radical Constitution with a radical Bill of Rights, giving a radical amount of individual freedom to Americans...When personal freedom's being abused, you have to move to limit it...That's what we did in the announcement I made last weekend on the public housing projects, about how we're going to have weapons sweeps and more things like that to try to make people feel safer in their communities"

If that's the case, I'm sure you'll have no trouble linking us to the Libertarian Party's website to show us exactly where in their platform you found that.

I agree with your analysis. After all, they are mostly pro abortion. So, many of them would vote for the demorats if given a choice.

Libertarians don't advocate FREE anything, meaning distributed free of cost. Subsidies of any sort are not in any way compatible with Libertarianism. Letting the market decide without government interference is.

We advocate letting people freely make their own choices, and letting them sink or swim.

Reagan knew this, when he said that libertarianism was the heart of conservatism.

I don't know any Libertarians who would cast a vote for a leftist. Regardless of their stand on personal freedom/responsibility issues.

Right on the money. Lots of libertarian candidates here in the Gem state, but they rarely get above 4% of the vote.

EXACTLY!

we need to SUPPORT the Liberaltarians much like Perot supported Clintoon.....

Push the drugs on college campuses and in the inner city.....that will take away millions of votes for the Democrats and the GOP will win.....easy as that

Lets start using the Liberaltarians......

lets use them to defeat the demorats.....

"...you could make a convincing case that Clinton was a closet Libertarian."

To the insane, perhaps. Do I really need to present here the long list of anti-libertarian policies that Clinton implemented during his eight long years? Let's start with Somalia, Haiti and Kosovo and move on to universal health care and move on to the Family Leave Act, the Clinton tax increase and the Microsoft anti-trust suit...

Get the picture...?
