The income tax is voluntary, remember? A simple majority vote in congress, signed into law by the president, would allow us to sign a form that we no longer volunteer. No need to amend.

Dubya is already perhaps the greatest president ever. If he does this, he'll be untouchable in the annals of American History. And there are six more years to go!!! Not to mention all the righteous victories sure to come against what are perhaps the scummiest fanatical villains ever to set foot on planet earth -- the democrats.

Any change in the tax law is designed to do one thing: raise more money. The source and the mechanism may change but in the confusion taxes will be increased. And some sectors will suffer. Remember a few years ago when they capped some deductions--the bottom fell out of the real estate market.

Wake up people! A 401K is just an investment account that is protected from THE INCOME TAX. If there is no income tax, then effect EVERY ACCOUNT YOU HAVE IS A 401K!ROFL!

Plus, home ownership does have a stabilizing affect on the country. All of a sudden, with the national sales tax, it makes less sense to own your home. No write-off on the interest... let someone else deal with the headaches of maintaining my place of residence.Well, sell your home to someone else. No tax on it. Buy another used home, no tax.

I see no need to audit individual tax payers. There will still be a necessity for tax audits on retailers, but it should only need to be on the sales records and that they collected and forwarded the tax. There should be no tax reason for a full audit. I agree. Further, the system is already in place in most, if not all, states to collect retail sales tax. The extra "burden" on retailers to forward part of the sales tax to the Feds would be significantly offset by the elimination of the bewildering tax return small businesses are burdened with.

Of course goods and services are going to cost more. But anything that keeps me (self-employed) from agonizing over every dime I earn, thinking that it might increase my final tax debt so that in the end it will wipe out my earnings, is a thing devoutly to be wished.

In other news I'm predicting major layoffs at HR Block.
In a rational world, that is what would happen (even though I don't like to see
anyone lose a job).
But just as Walter Reuther (sp?) of the auto workers union used some early-day computer modeling
to convince auto manufacturers to pay their employees more...maybe the "unintelligent" (HA!)
Dubya will make a case that alterations of the code will lead to greater efficiency...and profits.
As the guy who introduced socialized medicine in England said when asked what he'd
do to convince M.D.s to go with the new system:
"I shall fill their mouths with gold."
(he just didn't say it wouldn't last...)

Any change in the tax law is designed to do one thing: raise more money. Bush is out to raise the economy. And if he gets enough support, he will succeed. If his own base refuses to trust him, I guess we might as well learn to say, "President Hillary", or perhaps, "Great Emperess".

Just there...my hubby was just talking about what will become of tax free bonds too and the people who sell them.

"Just exclude basic food items and housing."
And medicine.

Of course goods and services are going to cost more. Well, you can afford to pay more if you aren't paying income tax or profit-based taxes, right?

While I have strong reservations---and prefer a simple flat tax, a la Forbes---I think the likelyhood of ever getting that is zip. Therefore I could support this. Anything is better than what we had. (Check that, didn't people say that about Gerald Ford?)

Unless they buy it on the black market. That's the only major problem I see with such a system: a black market would spring up immediately, and it would be very, very hard to defeat.Yeah, you're right. Nobody avoids income tax by dealing in cash now, do they?

I don't think GW is interested in memorials. Prayers? Yes.
