And I would ask someone to explain to me how bad it would be for Democrats if they don't finish second in the race.

First, the Democratic party would be listed THIRD on ballots for the next four years. This would not only be embarrassing, but may cost a few votes, as some folks don't look past the top two candidates. These are the people who look to "be on the winning team", and they figure only the top two have a shot at winning.

Additionally, it may cost them some patronage jobs...

Every county has two government employee Board of Election Commissioners, who have responsibility for registrations, running elections, etc. The two commissioners are appointed by the top two finishing parties in the gubernatorial race. If the Dems finish second they lose all their Board of Election Commissioners - this would be a disaster for them in terms of the patronage and their ability to manipulate elections.

I meant to say that the Dems would lose all their Election Commissioners if they finished third, not second.

But I don't think there's any chance of that happening. By engaging in all this speculation about withdrawing, I believe Golisano has totally undercut his campaign and demoralized his supporters. He'll be lucky to get 10% now.

Gov. Pataki has opened up a commanding 20-point lead over Carl McCall - who one political leader said yesterday has run the worst-ever Democratic campaign for governor.

"this would be a disaster for them in terms of the patronage and their ability to manipulate elections."

What great news. Hang in there, Golisano, and don't get in any planes.

Finally found a news source :

Golisano Aide Says He's Staying in Governor's Race

11/3/02 - New York) -- A top aide to B. Thomas Golisano says the billionaire is staying in the governor's race. The word from campaign strategist Erick Mullen comes even as Golisano is urging voters to stay tuned for an announcement this evening on his future. Golisano says he's bought time on New York's WNBC and WABC and CNN at 6:28 pm to make the announcement. He was pressed in a debate yesterday to answer clearly whether he was planning on leaving the race. And he said only: "I am a candidate for governor of this state." All this comes as a new poll shows Governor Pataki with a 16-point lead over Democrat H. Carl McCall. The poll by Newsday and cable news channel New York One has Pataki at 43%, McCall at 27% and Golisano at 16%. The random telephone poll of 1,052 likely voters was conducted this past Monday through Friday and has a sampling margin of error of plus or minus three percentage points.

hmmm, if a certain percentage of New York Republicans switched votes, it could be very interesting.

So what effect does this have on the race??

Zero. But if we're lucky he'll get more votes than McCall, which will both humiliate the RATS and force them into the third slot on the ballot next election.

NY's arcane election laws punish the party of anyone who doesn't finish first or second. The top two parties get to staff and run lots of the election machinery, and future ballot position is determined by the last election cycles, so Dems would drop to the THIRD spot on the ballot, making it even harder for their, ahem, intellectually challenged partisans to locate them.

what a farce, turns out to be nothing more than self promotion...

though i would like to see Gilasano finishes second and McCall finishes third...

what a disaster the ny dems have become...

nyc goes republican (ok, even for rinos) for three terms -

now ny state goes republican for the third term as well, when was the last time a rep. holds 3 straight terms...

if i were mccall, i wont get on any planes, or even trains now - you know, strange things can happen...ever thought of billy never let-go clinton run for gov. for ny as a mccall replacement...it's not too late - still 24 hrs to go...

now the question becomes is 2006...i bet pataki wont run there - who will be next - if i were a republican in that state, i wont mind to have gilasano running in the conservative ticket, that will really hit the dems hard in that state...

2006 will be an interesting yr for ny - hillary's second term for the senate, prelude for her 2008 run?...2006 - ny gov....

I know Clinton was suppose to meet with him in NY last week.
I figured Clinton would offer him Arkansaside unless he cooperated.
I thought by Monday, Golisano's announcement would be that he quits and backs McCall.
Democrats are desperate in NY. They have no money, just the Clintons.
Galisano was for tax cuts, less waste, and non-affermative action, smaller government..... The only reason he'd back a Democrat is because he's been threatened with "Vince Foster Disease."
