NEW YORK -- Did "firing" Ann Coulter lead to the departure of the editor who axed her?
"I don't think that had anything to do with it," said Bob Unger, who -- in what he described as a "mutual" decision -- stepped down Monday as executive editor of the Centre Daily Times in State College, Pa.
Early last month, Unger dropped Coulter from the newspaper's column lineup, arguing that her syndicated commentary was "mean." This decision infuriated many fans of the conservative Coulter, though Unger said "80 to 85%" of the more than 5,000 e-mails he ultimately received supported his decision. "I know that doesn't represent the general population, but it represented the people who wrote me," he told E&P Online.
So why did Unger and the Centre Daily Times part ways? Unger, who was reached at home, said there was "a difference in style and objective" between him and Henry Haitz, who became publisher of the paper several months ago. Unger declined to give specifics, noting that he was not allowed to do so under his separation agreement.
Unger, who had been executive editor for 2 1/2 years, said he had no immediate job prospects but was working on his second novel.
Me-e-e! Never, never, never!
In my youth I was fired a few times. Most of the time I deserved it.
I can't ever remember being such a wimp that I lied about it.
As I said in response to the application question, "Were you ever dismissed from a position, or did you ever resign from a position to avoid dismissal?," I was never dismissed, and never resigned to avoid dismissal, but I did have a number of mutual agreements with my coworkers....
Oh, and some of my other positions were eliminated.
To begin with, he couldn't "fire" her. She didn't work for him. He could only drop her column.
AP-via Pennlive.com 10/22/02 3:54 PMSTATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) -- Robert V. Unger resigned as vice president and executive editor of the Centre Daily Times of State College, effective immediately, the paper announced Tuesday.
Unger said he and publisher Henry Haitz had "some differences in where we saw the paper going, differences in style and direction," and that his was a "mutually agreed-upon departure."
Haitz said Unger "deserves credit for continuing the CDT's tradition of award-winning journalism." During Unger's 2½-year tenure, the newspaper won successive Keystone awards from the Pennsylvania Newspaper Association, including its fifth consecutive "sweepstakes" award this past year.
Haitz said the paper would immediately begin a nationwide search for Unger's replacement.
Unger received national attention last month when he wrote an open letter to conservative columnist Ann Coulter, saying the paper would no longer run her columns and calling her "mean -- vicious, really -- which is why we do not believe that you in any way serve the public good."
Before coming to State College, Unger was editor in chief for a group of 13 weekly newspapers in the Boston area. He also served as the top editor of newspapers in St. Joseph, Mo., Jacksonville, Ill., and Holyoke, Mass., and is the former president of the Missouri Associated Press Managing Editors and the Northwest Missouri Press Association.
LOL! He did get sacked for it! Neener-neener!
Believe me, if I took on Ann, I WOULD be doing it to her face...and often. She would insist. And those long legs...
Ann, why haven't you called? You know you want to...
See H1??
*This* is how it's done.
Tell your friends over at the Irish pub/stinker to study this "technique" carefully.
We yanks have a simple slang term for getting rid of these kinds of leakers.
..."Delousing." ;^)
HA!!
Second *novel*, huh?
He thinks Annie was mean?
...wait'll he meets the clowns running the unemployment office. :o)
Is this a "Max Schumacher" right outa "Network," or what?
...how sweeeeeeet it issssss!
There isn't a single factual error in that description. The Kennedy's are and will always be low class pond scum made wealthy through the Pater Familias' bootlegging and timely exit from the stock market in '27. Corrupt as corrupt can be and Ann only told the truth.
