Okay - just home from hubby's eye surgery, dinner in oven, tv on, live thread, I'm reading frantically to get caught up here. Are we sure yet that if he resigns, Dem. Governor legally can appoint someone to replace Torricelli for TWO YEARS?

Perhaps here is a Democrat "suitable candidate":

Didn't he also lie about it to Tom Brokaw on NBC?

I know this could be wishful thinking but in light of all the speculations, could McGreevey be an honest broker and do the right thing in spite of the DNC?

I only have one comment:

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

While the NJ law reads that way, that would be a violation of the Seventeenth Ammendment. This seat is up in January 2003, not 2005.

The only exception ever recognized by a New Jersey court was in the case of the death of a nominee.

I've been trying to think of clever questions to ask the dems when they ask for an exception. How about, "What is known now that wasn't known a month ago, other than the current poll numbers?" Or: "what is to prevent any party in the future from replacing any candidate who isn't doing well in the polls?" Or: "Would you be doing this if the poll numbers favored re-election?"

If they can do anything else, including sacrificing his race so they get he national news media "focusing" on the "stolen" NJ race, then the national news media have protected Dashole's lead by focusing on those "mean nasty conservative cruel election-stealing anti-environmental hate-mongering republicans" ....

Look, we all know that people are stupid. And the election results which went back and forth all through the night on election day helped cement the notion that the race could be stolen. But I just can't imagine that will fly here. A loser trying to jump out of the race to give someone else a better chance?

Thanks. This article was posted on FR. If you follow the link (14th paragraph) you'll see the email from the General Counsel to Bill Frist.

What happens if Torch says I am withdrawing from the race......vote for X(but X isn't on the ballot) ....andTorch's name..... wins .....then the TORCH claims victory but the seat belongs to X.............see how tangled this could get.

"I can't help but like Traficant. Who seems to have taken noone down with him."

I hate the Torch but like Traficant too...he got a raw deal from the joint House/Senate vote to boot him...while Toricelli, who IMO is a much worse crook, got a wrist slapping so as not to upset the Daschle-Senate status quo. Not Toricelli is screwing New Jersey voters out of a fair election.

I DO wish Traficant had taken some members of the Democratic Machine down...hopefully he will write a tell all book.

Thanks for info; hard to get caught up on a 700 reply thread and just getting home. How likely is it the Dems will try monkey business through courts to get someone appointed for 2 years vs. election process?
