I'm a big fan of country and have never heard of Steve Earle till his glorification of Jihad Johnny. A coworker of mine who doesn't like country but likes rock hasn't heard of this scumbag either. How popular is he?
I've read one leftist who loves this guy and this articles alludes to their being more? Is that true? Is this just a guy who is only popular with the leftists. He admits to being a communist. Does he have ties with people like Al Gore and Cynthia McKinney. I don't want to overstate his importance but if this guy gets more popular he might be able to weaken the public's resolve to fight terrorism.

Didn't you already start a similar thread about Earle just a week or so ago? Sorry but seems to me he's garnering more publicity from you than i've seen from just about any other source.

Well, there's an old tradition in this country of songs about the likes of Jesse James or Bonnie and Clyde, not to speak of all those pore folks shot by the revenooers, but I draw the line at the Benedict Arnold Blues.

I'm just the opposite of you. I've heard a lot of Steve Earle, but never knew he was a pinko. He
was one of the few "country" artists I could listen to.
Too bad such a talented person could become a complete moronic a$$hole.

I live in a big city, so yes I've heard of him...and back when he did his one big hit "Copperhead Road", I believe the country music station here played that a lot...and I liked it a lot...but, the album, outside of that song was awful. At that time, when it came out, it was unusual for a country artist to be left-leaning or Democrat.

He's a paroled ex-felon, as well, though it's unlikely his parole status can now be revoked. He sort of bears a physical resemblance to Taliban Johnny as well.

(How popular is this guy?)Well, not terribly, but he's like a lot of these sort of "niche" performers--whom I typically enjoy a lot more than the "big names" for what it's worth. I call him a "Mucky Duck-er" after the "Mucky Duck," a club here in Houston that tends to feature these types of performers (Earle has played there on numerous occasions).
Another example would be Leo Kottke, the guitarist of whom I've been a fan for more than 25 years, but who most people have never heard of.
These types often feature as guests on PBS shows like "Prairie Home Companion" or "Mountain Stages."

BTW, I despise the Steve Earle stuff, but I also think the Toby Keith song is utterly stupid. So I don't know where that puts me. In limbo, I guess.

"I believe that capitalism is fundamentally oppressive because it depends on the service of labor (read: "work") in order to thrive," Ok, let's see if I've got it right from this genius. He says he doesn't believe in capitalism because one has to work in order to be successful (thrive).
Well no wonder I'd never heard of him before this. He doesn't believe in working.

How popular is this guy?I've never even heard of him...and I find it hard to believe many country music buffs are avid readers of a leftist rag like Salon.

I am very interested in this guy. My posting history shows that I post on wide variety of topics.

Do you know how popular he is and what percentage of his fans are not leftists?
To: grlfrnd
It still is.

Whoever thought there would be a day when a guy wearing a Lenin t-shirt and singing songs about red flags would be a country music star? Or even have a record contract.
The best way to deal with this when you hear one of his songs is to call up the radio station and kindly inform them that they are about to lose a listener and call up the advertiser that was nearest to the song and ask them why the radio station is playing their commercial next to an anti-American song. If country music listeners don't bother to do this then they should not be surprised when Steve Earle Clone II and Steve Earle Clone III get record contracts and become the mainstream.
