FAYETTEVILLE -- Former President William Jefferson Clinton will visit the University of Arkansas campus Oct. 21 to dedicate a sculpture of J. William Fulbright in the garden of Old Main, university officials announced Friday.Fulbright, a Fayetteville native, served briefly as president of the university and for many years as a U.S. senator before his death in 1995. He established several international partnerships and study abroad programs during his work, both as a senator and a university president.
The sculpture was commissioned by UA officials from Gretta Bader, an artist based in West Virginia. The sculpture will be installed in the garden of Old Main, facing the Fulbright Peace Fountain, sometime next week. Its commission was part of the same effort that created the Fulbright Peace Fountain, designed by E. Fay Jones and dedicated in 1998.
Clinton, in his first visit to Fayetteville since leaving office, will be the main speaker at the dedication. The event is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. between Old Main and Vol Walker Hall. The public is invited to attend. About 300 chairs will be set for reserved seating, with ample standing room around them. The dedication will be part of a celebration honoring the 50th anniversary of the German-American Fulbright Educational Exchange Program.
During the same trip to Arkansas, Clinton will also be inducted as an honorary member of the Arkansas Black Hall of Fame, a ceremony scheduled for Oct. 19 in Little Rock at the state house convention center, according to Skip Rutherford, president of the Clinton Foundation.
For the sculpture dedication, UA officials have also invited German President Johannes Rau to speak, but his participation has not been confirmed. Other speakers for the dedication include UA Chancellor John White, poet Miller Williams, Fulbright College Dean Donald Bobbitt, and Harriet Fulbright, widow of the late senator. John McCloy and Bettina Adenauer, both descendants of the signers who established the Fulbright program in Germany, will also speak.
A reception will follow the dedication at 2:45 p.m. in the ballroom of the Arkansas Union. The reception is open to the public.
The day's activities will begin with a symposium on German and American business relationships at 9 a.m. in the auditorium of the Continuing Education Center on Center Street of downtown Fayetteville.
Panelists include:
Jack Jones, executive director of the American Institute for Contemporary German Studies at John Hopkins University.

Any wagers on how long it will take somebody to post the
'Clinton Monument'?
Yep, but don't expect Jesse or Al to show up protesting.
Halfbright was a dem, ya know, so he gets a pass.
I wonder why a picture of a male dog DEDICATING a fire hydrant just popped into my head?
LOL!
Great idea! Can we do that? Is it legal? Have you noticed how he always tries to pull these things off at odd times and under the radar? You think he's dodging us? I DON'T work that day! I'm sure there are other FReepers who have some scheduling flexibility too. Maybe you could help with the signs?
