Since the Martha Toogood's story is being dissected into the most minute details, here's one aspect not yet discussed:

- Martha gets a spanking from her mommy (some call it a savage beating). Whatever that was, it turns out that not one doctor, not even the prosecutor could find any sign of abuse such as bruises, cuts, broken bones, missing limbs or rigor mortis. In fact there are nude pictures apparently showing Martha as intact as ever.

- The state takes Martha under its own loving wing and... MARTHA IS SICK NOW!!! In fact, Martha is so sick, not even her mother can be allowed to see her.

Can anyone explain what's going on here? Is Martha better off with the authorities in charge? Or is she a victim of the authorities loving care. Perhaps too much love got Martha sick?

The kid learned how to bob and weave after repeated beatings. We should also conclude that it's just a matter of time before this child gets beat to death if returned to this wench.

As I already stated yesterday ...

My grandfather's family on my mother's side were Irish grifters. In Ireland they were tinkers.

They settled on the outskirts of San Diego in the 1920's. My great-grandmother ran a spiritualist church, complete with seances and fortune telling. My grandfather and his brothers had a coffin factory in the basement of the spiritualist church. The coffins were gaudy (lots of gold and silver paint) and heavy (under the cushion stuffed with wads newspaper was a generous layer of dirt).

This group had special pride in their ability to even scam the dead. They practiced a wide variety of scams throughout their lifetimes.

My mother was physically, sexual and emotionally abused. When my mother was 'whupped',it was a team effort including her father, two uncles, two aunts and her grandmother. I suspect that little Martha has been routinely subject to rough parenting.

Mother never recovered from her childhood experiences; in time she became an abusive parent herself.

I hope and pray that this precious little girl and her little brothers can be rescued from this evil situation. Otherwise she will be trained into the family business, married off to an older man as a young teenager, and produce the next generation of Irish grifters.

blah blah and how come mom died her hair BEFORE she turned herself in? I'm sure she was just your average mother after all and decided on her way to vermont, new jersey, and back to dye her hair. You are grasping for straws. I don't know of any mother who if she was REALLY worried about what happened to her child who would not take them to the LOCAL emergency room. Good grief..my son had a broken leg a couple months back and believe me they will grill you just to be sure that child got it from an accident and we didnt find it necessary to drive several hundred miles away to have it attended to. The fine doctors who took care of my son was in no doubt in one of the states she passed through--Ohio. I'm sure there are plenty of fine doctors in the Michiana area who she could have taken this child too for God's sakes. I don't hear of people flocking to Vermont just to have a pediatrician care for their child. She was on the lamb(sp) you fool! This defense of this criminal(and I say that aside from the beating incident) is outrageous. If this is conservatism, I'm ashamed to be associated with it.

re #113....one thing i haven't seen or heard explained is why the parking lot camera followed her to the car??? was some perv in security just checking out the back pockets of her jeans or what? how many people exit the store each hr and does the parking lot cams follow everyone of them? I'll be you a 1/2 pint of cheap whiskey that if she had been 5'2' and 250-275 lbs, she could have killed that girl and skinned her out in the parking lot and there wouldn't be a video....i know what i think i saw and what the mother has said, but something still just doesn't add up right...can't quite put a finger on it, but sumpin jus ain't right!!

Yeah I wonder this as well, seeing as they are inbred in that clan. I wonder why did she go there and then come back--surely the borders are porous enough she could cross over or she could have gone back to her clan in Texas, but why there? One of her cohorts working that area and has a daughter of similar age and looks, after all we don't really have very good pics of the child. Oh that's right, some think she went to see some exalted physician, one she had to get to in a couple days drive just to be sure her daughter was allright, forget of course that her daughter could have died on the way there if she was in fact seriously injured.

Want to hear tinfoil? Like another poster said, if this is in fact the child, I'm beginning to think this was a big scam. Perhaps this is not what she wished to happen, but maybe she was hoping to get in an altercation in the parking lot and sue the hell out of someone or take the store for an insurance claim when SHE got hurt in a takedown. She wasn't counting on the incident being taped or that anyone would come after her for abuse. I mean this is the same claim that faked a rape and assault at a Disney hotel to collect on insurance. I don't find it beyond the pale that they would set an incident up like this to potentially commit insurance fraud. I still am skeptical myself of whether she landed any of those punches. Just seems like a set up, but like I said, I dont think she counted on the public outcry or videotape.

Martha's passive repsonse tells me that Martha is accustomed to the abuse.

There's a name for Martha's behavior, I think it is called 'learned helplessness.'

I live among Amish and Mennonite communities and I've noticed a great deal of similarities in the way people talk about travelers and the way people here talk about the plain people. It is a free country, this means people are free to be different. People don't have to live in specific type houses, use specific types of transportation, follow the same religious tenets, etc. to have equal unalienable rights.

Our governments can follow people all over the world to see what they are doing and make "bad people" pay. I expect they can handle following a traveller. After all they know all about her cars and all the towns she's been chased from because she's a traveller.

Agreed, that child is out of mom's(and the family's care) for more than just that videotape. I hope this whole thing has a domino over into that whole shady community. IMO, this is the best thing that could ever have happened to that child IF she is in fact adopted out to a good family soon. She had nothing to look forward to in that lifestyle, nothing at all.

Their lifestyle shouldn't be an issue even if it's criminal? That's some kind of freedom. So I guess you disagree with children being taken out of meth labs too? After all it's a free country right, why penalize the children because of their parent's lifestyle.

Since when was our legal system based upon broad generalities & "often-isms?" I thought we were innocent until proven guilty. There have not even been any child abuse charges against the father.

If the father had been the abuser, I doubt if CPS would have taken the child from the mother.

The video camera was brought out by the store. From what I understand there was some sort of incident in the store and they asked them to leave. I am unclear if she was trying to return merchandise which really had not been purchased or if Martha was opening Barbie packages and Toogood was supervising her. At any rate, they decided to film her. My estimation is that they are used to scam artists like this and a video is the best protection they have should an argument ensue and Toogood claim assault or if Toogood were to somehow get injured and try to sue them later. The film was the store's, which is why they knew her name and MO so quickly.

Normally, I don't like intervention from the state into a family situation. However, this is an exception. These people are itinerant thieves. They are teaching their kids nothing but scams (maybe later using them as foils-like a "King of the Gypsies" scenario). They have no residence and I don't think the kids even go to school of any sort (unless she's homeschooling, pity the students!). We will pay for them now or later and with a foster family, there is at least a snowball's chance that the kids will turn out ok.

What no one has said is if these crooks are citizens or not.

Just want to confirm that you are on record as stating that people whose "lifestlye" YOU do not approve of deserve to have their children removed from them - by the state.

I've heard the store camera followed her because they were suspicious - due to her behavior inside their store. My bet is she tried to scam them and they figured they'd better watch till she'd exited the parking lot.

"Lifestyles" are not criminal. Specific ACTS are criminal. If you commit a criminal act, then you should be prosecuted FOR THAT ACT. This particular woman's arrest record seems small and petty, however.

Sounds like a case of the blue-flu to me. The mom reportedly had talked the CPS just a short period before she showed up for the visitation. Either it's blue-flu or someone's communication skills need a little polish. Wouldn't you think a responsible foster parent would make notification prior to the appointed time of visitation? This actually raised a question of the foster parents fitness, for me.
