Stone Mountain’s Civil War military figures undergo inspection

STONE MOUNTAIN — The wind is strong 825 feet in the air.
And for geologists and others preparing to rappel more than 400 feet, the wind is an important factor.
On Tuesday, a team of three geologists and five assistants worked to clean and inspect the Confederate carving on the north face of Stone Mountain, the world’s largest relief sculpture.
Riding the sky lift back up to work Tuesday morning, Ryan Moran had little to say about the 10-hour job ahead of him. But he did note that the wind had died down since he was last eye-to-eye with a Confederate war hero.
Two of the geologists on the team had worked on Mount Rushmore, in Black Hills, S.D.
According to Christine Parker, Stone Mountain Park’s spokeswoman, the carving was completed in 1970 and was last inspected in 1994. She called the rappellers work “routine maintenance” for years of erosion.
Tuesday’s activity may have scared the three goats that live on the side of the mountain, she said, but it’s necessary to keep the site’s
4 million annual visitors happy.
The rappellers had planned to spend the entire day in the air, even eating lunch with Jefferson Davis and Robert E. Lee.
The sculpture includes Davis, the first president of the Confederacy, his horse Blackjack, Lee, and his horse Traveler and Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson on his horse Little Sorrel. General Lee stands nine stories tall, according to documents.
The granite from the mountain has been used in construction projects throughout the world, including the locks of the Panama Canal and the U.S. Capitol. The park is one of the most popular attractions in the United States and the most popular in Georgia.

I've seen Little Sorrel's stuffed remains at the VMI museum under Jackson chapel many times starting from when I was a young boy.

The laser show they do at the park, using the side of the mountain as a "screen", is pretty awesome. Lee Greenwood's "Proud to be an American" used to be always be one of the songs they used in the show (and probably still is, but I haven't gone in 2-3 years). Recommended.
And, Oh, yeah - they used to always end with "Dixie", and show the outline of the three riders (Davis, Lee and Jackson) "riding" away, in motion with the lasers. Really good stuff.

I have many fond memories of camping out on the lawn watching the laser show. Blankets, boiled peanuts, and of course sweet tea on a cool summer breeze make for a spectacular evening at Stone Mountain. What better way to enjoy the South?!

BTW: Greenwood was at the Opry the other nite - I saw it on TV. Sang Proud to be an American. He looked great, slim and healthy.
I have a version of Dixie sung by Greenwood - good stuff!
