Selected Quotes and Commentary from the Reparations Rally
The Citizens' Forum ^ | September 18, 2002 | Michael Patlan

Dear Reader,

On August 17, 2002, a rally was held by Millions For Reparations on the mall in Washington, D.C. The rally called for the payment of reparations to blacks for the crime of slavery from both the government and businesses. The following in italics are verbatim quotes, selected for their importance and significance related to the rally. The rest of the following is our commentary...

Ron Daniels, Institute of the Black World President

It’s about what you do every morning when you look in that mirror and take responsibility for organizing your block and your family.

It’s a shame that he is talking about taking responsibility to become a victim. This sentence alone sounds like a positive message that should be directed to young black men. Take control of your community; take control of your family. Kick the drug dealers out of the neighborhood so that the children you’ve fathered can go to school in a safe environment. Marry the girl you’ve gotten pregnant, stay there through good times and bad times. Solve the cultural pathologies of violence, drugs, illegitimacy/the breakdown of the family, and the rejection of “white values” like a focus on academics, education and success, and solve the problems of the black community. The great irony is that my message invites condemnation from the left and their behavior warrants protection. The left will say I am blaming the victim. I am. I am also blaming the perpetrator.

If they would be paid reparations for being slaves, then wouldn't their status be that of Africans and not as Americans? How can we pay our own people for what we did to ourselves unless some of us aren't Americans? We can't have it both ways unless we stop using the word 'we' when talking about all Americans. It will be us and them and that sounds too much like the past repeating itself.

This message should be branded upon some of the speakers foreheads.

Never mind, I found it. About 3000 (compare to the couple hundred thousand generated by the now pretty-much-defunct "million mom march" movement).

DOA.

There are a lot of reasons why reparations simply won't work anyway. Personally, when I first heard about the idea, I was actually open to it, but once you start thinking about it you realize the idea is simply without merit -- for many reasons.

That may be why it's largely the province of people who are seriously wacko:

Mr. Barron, however, was particularly vitriolic in his remarks, admitting, "I'm so mad I'm gonna slap somebody in a second. I might just walk up to the nearest white man and say, 'You don't understand, this is a black thing!' and slap him just for my mental health. I'm not angry, I'm mad. Black power!"

Now just imagine if a white person at a public rally proposed walking up to the nearest black person and slapping him "for my mental health."

What a sick individual. Come to think of it, he's not only seriously wacko, he's self-confessed seriously wacko.

Religious leaders of all denominations took part, such as veteran Brooklyn activist Reverend Herbert Daughtry of the House of the Lord Church, Prince Israel of the Nation of Israel who indicted DC as "the citadel of white supremacy" and Minister Ishmael Muhammad of the Nation of Islam.

Nation of Islam, eh? Sounds like good company. MOVE's foul-mouthed Pam Afrika's blistering, expletive-laced attack on Pennsylvania politicians over Mumia Abu-Jamal and other Philadelphia-based concerns seemed ill-timed even if thoroughly entertaining. "Back the F*ck off!" she warned her governor, summarizing that "We're gonna close this motherf*cker down."

Just the kind of wholesome people you'd love to be associated with.

I couldn't believe the official web site actually prominently features as its flagship motto, "They Owe Us."

Of course, I guess I shouldn't be surprised to find so many nutcases in an organization whose basic premise seems to be that every single last problem they have to deal with is the fault of somebody else.

Black conservative ping

If you want on (or off) of my black conservative ping list, please let me know via FREEPmail. (And no, you don't have to be black to be on the list!)

Extra warning: this is a high-volume ping list.

The Republicans, as usual, are making a tremendous mistake in not getting every single elected Democrat on the record about Reparations.

Meanwhile, the Dems are using the old tried-and-true Gramscian tactics to advance this agenda. First, the radicals and "agents of change" begin beating the drum. The culture at large mainly ignores them, only occasionally bothering to condemn them. But slowly, surely, inevitably, the issue becomes normalized and detoxified.

Over time, a few "mainstream" Democrats will take the "controversial but principled" position that Reparations "need to be discussed." This will provoke a belated and hysterical reaction on the part of conservatives and Republicans, which will allow the Dems and their media allies to portray us as racist.

And since there is no greater crime in this great Democracy than racism, no blacker stain on one's soul and reputation, this will provide the cover needed by the rest of the fence-sitting Dems to come out in favor of Reparations.

Amazing how these tactics work every single time. And amazing that no one on our side ever seems to recognize them for what they are.

Who says? It looked like about 100 (or less) on C-SPAN.

Actually, another source said "Several hundred."

Although most of the media seems to have reported it as, "Thousands of supporters of blah blah blah met at the blah blah blah today..."
