A FReeper posted a while back that Butt and alternate spellings of the same is very common in some areas of the world.
I understood that the name would be like Smith or Jones here.

Or "Patel" in India.

Have you ever heard of the H.E.B. chain of grocery stores?
Their last name was Butt.
Do you have an infatuation with the four letters B, U, and the two Ts in that order, or has this story just spurred your interest?
The surname "Butt" has nothing to do with the Middle East or terrorism, unless you may searching for a sodomite, but the relevance and connections thereof may very well be of little interest to normal Americans...

I guess you'd have to accuse OutlookIndia.com of those interests.
I posted an article of theirs this morning, that said this...
A Pakistani man who spent hours photographing the World Trade Center days before it was destroyed was sentenced to six months in jail for immigration violations exactly one year after suspicions over the pictures prompted his arrest.
Ashar Butt, 22, acknowledged that he entered the country illegally last year using an altered British passport, but his lawyers said he only came to the United States to start a new life.
Tonight, I just saw the picture of one of the Florida detainees with his name underneath--Butt.
Since I am not a prude, I reported what I read.
Some other posters on this thread have been helpful. They answered my question about how common the name Butt was in Pakistan.

Do you have a point or do you just regard gratuitous malice as fun on a Friday night?

It could be a coincidence, and maybe it's a common name, but just to be on the safe side, let's kick all of their Pakistani BUTTS.

If his name really is Butt, then I guess the cops will probably call in a proctologist to interrogate him.

" Do you have a point or do you just regard gratuitous malice as fun on a Friday night? "
What is your definition of "point"?
And "malice" ?
Who is suffering?
Well, tis I, for I have to answer your 'weekend travelling on FR" question, for if you knew a bit about satire, Madam, then this question would be moot, unlike my answer...

Merely a guess, but is this Butt stuff kind of a "sore point" with Vidalia....for some reason?
Hell, I'll admit right upfront that I've had a Hemmie or two.........no big thing; just 'ice it and move on' :)

You've got one of these collector's items? Is that to what you refer?

1957 Chrysler New Yorker 2 Door Hardtop, 392 Hemi Unrestored with 38,000 miles
Or maybe on of these?
Described as, "Original curious yellow convertible with factory 4 speed. This car is an original N96 " Shaker Hood" optioned car. There were only 684 non Hemi Cuda's that came with this option and only a very small percentage were 383 4-speed cars. This Cuda is 1 of only 33 convertibles with 383 motor made in 1971 and only 1 of 2 or 3 made with these same options. "?
Could you be more specific?

Butt was also the family name of the guy they arrested for taking photos of the WTC days before the 9/11 attack. Muhammed Butt was the name of the Pakistani who had gingivitis and who died of heart disease in custody in the U.S. in October. He was said to have been cleared of any connection with terrorism and was only being held on a visa violation. But the idea was floated (by Debka, I think, so believe it at your own risk) that his gingivitis was actually a symptom of radiation poisoning, that he might have been an al-Qaeda mule transporting radioactive material.
See this CNN article and this Washington Post article, for the official story.
But Butt is a fairly common name in that part of the world, I'm told.

Thank you for the interesting information on Mohammed Butt! I forgot about the post-9/11 prisoner who people thought (at first) might have died of anthrax.
The Hazmat unit from Jersey City was called in as a precautionary measure because the man was detained days after the attacks and he was of Middle Eastern descent," said Delemos. "However, no traces of anthrax were found."
I found this information on him, too.
Pakistani Immigrant Dies While In Federal Custody
Suspected Of Link With Bin Laden
by Rob MacKay
A Pakistani man from South Ozone Park died in custody last Tuesday after having been jailed by federal officials for questioning about his possible connections to the September 11 terrorist attacks.
Mohammed Rafiq Butt, 55, was found dead in his New Jersey prison cell at around 11 a.m. Reportedly, he was lying face up on a cot he shared with another detainee. The cause has been listed as heart failure, and there were no signs of violence or poisoning.
Butt, a restaurant worker, arrived in the U.S. about a year ago with a tourist visa that had since expired. After being picked up just after the attacks, he had been in the Hudson County jail in Kearny for more than a month, but officials hadnt found any links between him and terrorists.
Showing no desire to fight his deportation, Butt had agreed to return to Pakistan and was awaiting his trip. He hadnt complained of health problems.
